Day 5, A Good Day

We are definitely feeling better about everything so far. Based on the feedback we have received from doctors, nurses and other triplet families, our babies are doing the best that is realistically possible for being 24 weekers. We’ve now talked to a couple of different Neo-docs about the brain bleeds and they all feel it’s just not that big of a deal right now. It has the potential to be a big deal, but so early in their life, things like this are to be expected.

All the babies were removed from the high velocity ventilators today. Wow that is cool. They were put on a regular ventilator that allows them to breathe normally. The high velocity ventilators made their bodies shake like they were cold. It was very worrysome to see them breathing like that because it made them look like they were in a lot of pain. If the babies do not do well on this ventilator, they can always put them back on the high velocity ones.

Also the babies had their follow up cardio scans for their PDAs. They are finished with the first round of their medication. Kaylee’s and Paige’s PDA is pretty much shut. The blood is flowing in the right direction and they look pretty good. Cole was put on another round of medication. His PDA didn’t shut as well as they would like it to. Hopefully the next round of medication will do the trick. Cole is quickly becoming the problem child. He’s always kicking and swinging his arms, he never responds to treatment as well as his sisters, plus he’s always sedated! The doctor’s had originally told us they would do 3 rounds of the medication before trying surgery. So we are very optimistic about resolving his PDA problems with medication.

The babies are pooping and peeing a lot. They even double bagged Paige. It’s a really good thing for them because it means their kidneys are working nicely.

Tobie visited the NICU for the first time not as a patient. She had a really good day helping the nurses tend to the babies. They even dressed little Paige in some clothes. Hopefully she’ll take some pictures tomorrow. I didn’t bring the camera today, doh! Supposedly if the babies keep responding well to their treatments we might be able to hold them next week.
