Just when you think you got the hang of this whole NICU thing, it hits you over the head again with a 2-by-4. So the babies have been having a great few days (minus the spinal tap of course). Of course we don’t expect any problems, so of course something major happens. Cole was chilling on Tobie’s chest for about 5 minutes when all of the sudden his O2 and his pulse drops. He even starts to turn blue. What was going on? This is serious stuff. Before we know it, Cole is put back in his bed and is immediately surrounded by 8, no kidding, 8 nurses and doctors.
There is lots of talking between nurses and doctors, a little yelling, and definitely lots of crying. It turns out Cole had some reflux which moved his breathing tube, so he wasn’t able to breath. Thanks to the quick reaction of the NICU staff, he had his tube pulled and a new one reinserted in a blink of an eye. While this whole thing was going down, nobody was talking to Tobie. Of course they were a little involved with the drama king. He’s doing okay now, but is very tired.
Paige on the other hand was super again. She laid on Tobie’s chest for a good hour and did great. Both babies are doing well with feedings. There was a little issue with them having reflux, so they are going to feed them over an hour and half versus and hour so they have more time to digest the milk. Paige is now gaining steady weight, she is one ounce shy of 2 pounds. The doctors expect them both to gain between 1/2 to 1 ounce a day on their current diet regimen.
They finally put together the chair we got the NICU. One of the bedside nurses took charge and put it together. Can you say, insert tab A into slot b? Done.
