Tobie here: Paige was put on CPAP as of 11 am today. The transition from the vent to the CPAP went really smooth (at least from the four or five attempts the babies have been through thus far). Paige is hardly requiring any supplemental oxygen and her last lab tests came back as the best the nurse has seen from Paige. As soon as the procedure was complete, Paige went to town on her pacifier. You can say it was her first good suck since popping out. In the picture to the left you can see she isn’t even willing to let it go! Wow (Stef, notice her blanket?
She hasn’t christened it yet if you know what I mean).
Cole also is responding really well to the steroids. His oxygen needs are also considerably down from what he has been needing. He is scheduled for extubation tomorrow.
I thought I might have been coming down with a cold due to sniffles this
morning so I wore a mask upon entering the NICU. After being there for about 15 minutes the nurse manager approached me and asked me to leave. It was really hard for me to walk away with Cole looking at me with his big beautiful blue eyes and wanting to give Paige a huge congratulatory squeeze. As horrible as I felt leaving them without touching or holding them…turns out another baby in the NICU needed emergency surgery and they made all visitors leave anyway.
UPDATE (7 PM): Just talked to the hospital. Paige is still on CPAP. They did have to start giving her some assistance with what the nurse called “The Rate”. They didn’t seem that surprised by it, so we aren’t. She’s just a little tired from doing all this breathing on her own. They also shortened her feeds because air was building up in her stomach which causes her stomach to push up on her lungs, causing more distress.

Tob - If you are sick, get well soon (try EmergenCee) so you can be with the babes! GOOD JOB PAIGE!
I am so glad to hear that Paige made it to CPAP and is doing well so far. The rate will go up and down unitl she is breathing on her own. The lower the rate the better.. We rejoiced everytime the rate went down and just didn;tlet it bother us if it needed to be raised at times. I hope all goes well for Cole also.
I know your husband asked to see pictures of our babies and I am trying to get some together to send. In the meantime, if you go to http://www.pinkgeek.net and look to the left of the page for the 3 sprouts, those are pictures of our babies. Just click on the link and there are 18 sets of pictures. The website is my
B-in-L and was nice enough to show off our babies.
Good luck with Paige on her CPAP and on COle going to CPAP.
Suzan
Suzan,
Your kiddos are now right fat now! Good work. Looking at some of those pictures is like looking at us in some bizzaro world. It’s still hard to believe our babies will look like fat normal sized babies eventually.
E
Man, couldn’t you find any smaller pacifiers???? Just kidding. We’re glad the blanket is getting used. Stef just started on a new one last night. We hope that Cole and Paige keep getting better and better. We’re praying for all of you.
