Tobie here: What a fantastic day in the NICU for the Kaufman family. I think this was the best day yet for us. Here’s the best part of the day: neither baby desatted while I was there. Cole only had one boogie issue and it was not a big deal. I have a bet going with the NP that today’s success was due to the nasal spray, she thinks it’s due to the lasic drug the babies have been on for a few days now. Either way, we both agreed that whatever it was, we need it to keep working.
Today was the first day the babies met outside the womb. It was such a beautiful moment. I will never forget when they touched each other for the first time.
Tomorrow I am going to start non-nutritive breastfeeding with Paige now that she is off the CPAP and doing so great. That means that I am going to pump before letting her try to breastfeed. The lactation consultant says that Paige will not be able to draw out any milk, but that I should pump first just in case. I’m worried I may inadvertently drown Paige. Her and Cole are such active suckers of their pacifiers, I’m hoping they’ll be great with the breast/bottles.
Cole was in good spirits today. He only cried once. It was after I held him for over two hours and he needed to go back in bed. Do you hear my heart breaking??
UPDATE: Also, thanks must go out to the nurses for helping us capture their reunion on film. Speaking of film, here it is, another Kaufman production. I’ll call this film, Reunited (I couldn’t find the star swipe fade out, sorry).

Wait, this picture of Tobie and babies is different some how…it’s like…she’s got an actual shirt on this time. Woah.
Oh, I am so very happy for you all! I know that you’ve been waiting such a long time to reunite your children, and I can only imagine all the feelings that you went through during that time together…
May there be MANY more similar experiences! (And may the kids always be so loving towards each other - instead of punching each other in the face or pulling at eah other’s cords!)
Great, now I got that song running through my head all day.
It almost looks like Paige is trying to help Cole pick his nose, but he’s cleverly employing the 3 stooges eye block.
Wise guy eh?

OMG! I am welling up here - it is so beautiful to see them touching and you holding them both! And that you get to start fake breast feeding Paige (non-nutritive is just a fancy word for fake, right?)!
