3 Days Running

What a day.

The babies had their first eye exam today. Do you know how difficult it is to have a preemie read an eye chart? The tubes kept getting in the way and the most we could get out of the babies was a fart. We were very freaked about getting that exam. You would think they were doing it to us! Anyways, the babies tolerated it just fine. Their sats didn’t change at all and they didn’t even cry. Phew (we were really worried about having a setback with Cole because he is so temperamental)! The not so good news is they have slight stage 1 ROP in their right eyes. The doctor said he’ll be back in two weeks to check them again. He said most of the time the ROP resolves itself (fingers crossed). They do a procedure with a laser if the babies get to severe stage 3 ROP. It’s a pretty common preemie procedure so we aren’t going to sweat it until we have to (just like Cole’s impending hernia operation). So all in all this is good news.

The bigger news of the day is the babies got moved to an open crib together. This came out of nowhere! The babies have been running hot lately. Since the isolet really seals them in, they were having a tough time keeping Cole contained without increasing his body temperature. Paige slept through the move, Cole was pretty awake. Cole was also weaned down to 30% O2 today. Wow, where did this come from? He was running kind of high the past couple of days at around 70%.

Paige also started breast feeding today (well not so much feeding, but a lot of latching and sucking). I know, wow! She was introduced to the boobie yesterday without much fan fare. She had a couple of licks and that was it. Today, she went straight for the boob and went to town. As a man I never thought my boobs would hurt so much! She really isn’t supposed to start sucking down the juice until 34 weeks because she really doesn’t know how to swallow yet. Soon grasshopper.

Oh yeah, Paige now weighs 3 pounds 11 ounces and Cole is still at 3 pounds 5 ounces. They are upping their feedings again. Paige is going to be getting 36 ccs a feeding and Cole 33 ccs. We’re hoping Cole will catch up again to sis now that we can really wrap him up and keep him calm. I have yet to see a swaddle that can hold him. Hmmm…gives me an idea. Preemie straight jackets.

What a great day for your babies! I was thrilled to hear that their eye exams went so well. That is absolutely great news! Two of my boys had mild ROP, but can’t remember if it was Stage 1 or 2….and it did resolve itself within a couple of months. I’m hoping the same for your babies!

The pictures are adorable, I’m so glad they are together again! Sounds like each day is getting better and better!

It’s so wonderful that they are reunited… for good! Our doctor yesterday told us how this next month should go so fast, and a LOT of progress should be made - amazing how much can change in just a day! Congratulations on so much! (And although I know you were stressed, I’m glad that the babies weren’t stressed by the eye exam.)

You ain’t kidding about how fast things are moving. They are now saying that Paige should be coming up in about 2 weeks. I guess they hit a certain mark of health and there is no turning back!

      2 weeks???!!!!
      Oh my goodness!
I know that I feel like I’m bustling around during the time that I’m not at the hosptial - trying to get the house ready. Make sure that we have things like bottles, a cleared pathway to the crib, today I’m going shopping for “sleep sacks” since they’re not allowed to have blankets in the crib at home…
Not sure about the 2 of you, but I’m SO wanting my girls to come home - but terrified at the same time.
