It wasn’t long ago that Saturday night was for going out and partying. Now it’s time for blogging baby! Thursday night we were going to go to the NICU, but I couldn’t stop coughing. I wasn’t feeling sick, I just had a tickle in the throat. Tobie had packed up the car that day and was ready to leave for the NICU at first light Friday morning. Guess what? She woke up with Mastitis. Do you think that was going to stop her from going to the NICU? Heck no. She was out the door and at the NICU when they opened up at 8 am after shift change. About 11 am I get a phone call. Tobie was in so much pain she couldn’t drive herself to the doctor and needed me to pick her up. I kept asking her in my best Seinfeld voice: “So you are at a hospital, but you can’t see a doctor” What you only work on premature babies? What you only deliver babies? What kind of hospital is this? Anyways, I was finally able to say hello to the babies after not being there a week. The visit was short as we had to get Tobie to the doctor. Luckily Dr. Elliot was able to squeeze us in and confirm Tobie had Mastitis. She was prescribed some antibiotics and we were on out way. I have to say those antibiotics are amazing. This is the second time Tobie has taken them and both times with in a few hours she started feeling 100% better (maybe it was the percocet).
Since we had to leave Tobie’s car at the hospital on Friday, I had to drive Tobie to the hospital on Saturday. Unfortunately she didn’t tell me we had to be up at the crack of dawn so we could be there for the morning feeding (why doesn’t it feel we are living on a farm?). I’m counting down the number of weekends we can sleep in (luckily we still have Sunday left for this weekend). We had a great day at the NICU. I was able to bathe Paige for the first time. She started off absolutely loving it and ended up pissed as the water cooled off. I did learn a couple of things though. It is amazingly difficult to bathe her alone. It’s definitely a two person job (unless you are a nurse, in that case you can bathe a baby and probably extubate another baby at the same time!). I have to assume putting Paige back in her little outfit is also a 2 person job because I couldn’t figure it out (daddy boot camp here I come!). I didn’t even attempt to put the diaper on as I know when I’ve been beaten. I guess Tobie will be able to handle all this in the future right? I kid I kid!
The babies are doing good. Paige is 4 pounds 6 ounces and Cole is almost 4 pounds 1 ounce. The babies are getting cutier and more baby like everyday. It’s amazing to witness their progression. They have had to turn up Cole’s O2 a little. He is still having some spells. I wouldn’t call him unstable anymore, but as Cole’s nurse puts it, he is fragile. She realistically thinks they’ll be coming home in about a month. I’m very inclined to agree with that assessment. To help make our situation more bearable, I like to pretend we are very very wealthy and can afford many au pairs. And each day we drop the kids off at the spa with them. Ahhh what a great imaginary life we live!

Mastitis AGAIN???
Might I suggest a VERY stern talking to, to both your bodies and immune systems, indicating that:
(1) you’ve been under enough stress to last a lifetime,
(2) you are fully aware of the stress and don’t need to be reminded of it, and
(3) you really do not appreciate the further stress of illnesses!
I’m glad to hear that you’re both feeling better from sickness and pain!
