Another Day At The Spa

eric   April 6th, 2006

The babies continue to enjoy the spa. Cole is really active again, so it’s real nice to have him back. That kid has so much personality. Paige on the other hand is just a little princess that doesn’t require much, except frequent diaper changes! Cole is almost at 5 pounds again. They have continued to wean him on his O2 and he is now eligible to move back with sis. He should be going back in her room tonight. They however aren’t going to co-bed them for the time being because Cole still has an IV in him. Not sure when they will be officially reunited in the same bed again. The therapist was working with Paige and nippling today (with a bottle you sickos!). She noticed that Paige was having more trouble than she should. She also noticed Paige isn’t that vocal when she cries. So we are going to have an ENT doctor come down and stick a camera up her nose to see if her vocal cords are paralyzed. It never ends.

UPDATE 7 PM: Just talked to the nurse. The ENT doctor did come by and used a bronchoscope on Miss Paige. The left side of her vocal cords are paralyzed. What does this mean? She is compensating with her right side. Long term effects, unknown, but in 80% of the cases, she should self correct. More than likely she will work with a speech therapist on her voice in the coming years. She will probably have a soft or hoarse voice. They typically do not do surgery for cases like this. Right now it doesn’t look like fluid is going down into her lungs, but she will get a barium test to see for sure. They can always add fortifier to the milk to make it thicker so it goes down the right tube if it becomes an issue. They don’t seem too concerned about it, so I guess we’ll just table this one for a while. The next exam will be in 3 months. Just another fun thing to look forward to as she gets bigger. I’m going to find a list of preemie related complications, because I feel we are just checking each one of those off. We can look at it and see what’s next.

Tobie: “Oooh honey, next week is lazy eye syndrome, I can’t wait”.
Eric: “Screw that, I have my heart set on Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia”.
Tobie: “The suspense is killing me”.
Eric: “Better call 911, get it? Killing? nevermind”.

We know it could be worse (a lot worse, I had to stop reading a few blogs because they were just so dam sad), but it just always seems as if one good thing happens, one not so good thing follows. What I wouldn’t give for an uneventful birth. Anyone want to trade? Two for one? Yeah I’m kidding (seriously, all offers welcome, call me). Okay, I’m done whining, on with the show.

The babies were reunited as well. Cole was very active and was just looking around the room as if he remembered it. He is showing some strong visual acuity. It took a while for him to go to sleep, because as we all know, you can’t stop Cole, you can only hope to contain him! Luckily the nurses love to hold the little guy and that typically calms him down. I need to buy one of those slings you wear because when he’s home, I doubt we’ll be able to move without holding him.

Whoohoo! Let’s hear it for strong visual acuity! So am I to assume his IV’s out?

Have they had reunion spit-ups on each other? Or reunion back-of-the-head punches?

Nope, they are in seperate cribs for a while. But the same room, so that makes it easier to give love.

His IV is still in. It should be out Saturday. The longest 10 day antibotics round I have ever seen(it will be 12 days of drugs).
