Tobie here: Another day of fantastic news! Both Paige and Cole can hear out of both ears. The audiologist came by today and administered the test that the oxygen doesn’t interfere with. Yippee!
Cole is supposed to start breastfeeding once again by doctor’s orders. We haven’t breastfed in a while but our doctor wants me to breastfeed Cole to improve his muscle tone in his jaw. So the last two days I’ve tried to get him to breastfeed and he didn’t want anything to do with it. Then as I was giving last hugs before I was leaving today he was very excited to breastfeed and even attempted doing it through my shirt. Go figure. How much like Eric is he? That’s how Eric operates too. The more you ask him to do something, the more likely it is it won’t get done. But then one day out of nowhere he’ll shock you by doing that thing you asked him a hundred times to do and then some on top of it.
Have I mentioned how badly I want the babies to come home? I don’t know how much longer I can take being separated from them. Especially now that they are awake and curious so much more. It is pure torture to have to leave them every day. The NICU closes at 6:30pm every night and I don’t think I’ve left before 7pm the last few nights and even then I have to force myself to leave so the nurses can do their shift change.
Oh! One last thought: Paige took her first full bottle last night! Go Paige!

Oh, I’m so glad to HEAR this news!!!
(Ok, so you’re probably a whole lot happier than any of us have any right to be!)
I can’t imagine how painful it is to continue going to the hospital daily.
I know that it’s got to be old!
Now that Paige has taken her first full bottle, I hope that something has “clicked” and that feedings will begin to become easier… and that she will therefore be coming home soon. Any ideas yet, as to when?
I find it simply amazing how much strength and grace you have shown… in your writings and in your pictures.
I know it’s not easy, and it’s definately not fair! And I’m sure that you’ve heard a million times “you’re doing a great job” when you feel like there’s no choice in doing the job that you’re doing. Suffice it to say that Paige and Cole have amazing folks, and I’m sure that they want to be home with you as much as you want them home!
(I find myself telling the girls from time to time “Yup, it’s still me here. No other lady’s going to come and check your diaper or feed you… you just have me and Daddy now.” It’s an odd feeling, but I think they’re okay with it.)
TOBIE,
I am so glad to hear that Paige took a full bottle. I KNOW she will keep it up and then there will be no stopping her.
On another note, something they never tell you about the NICU atThomas. Since you are in a private room you technically DO NOT have to leave at shift change.. You are in a private room for a reason. Also, you can have meals from the cafeteria devlivered to your room so you never have to leave. All this we found our AFTER we left the NICU for good and my mom started to volunteer at the hospital.
Hope that littlebit of info. helps!!!
Suzan
Yeah…no one told me I could stay for shift change. Now I’ll never leave!! Poor Eric thought he had a wife…
Thanks for the info!
Tobie and Eric,
