Overdue Update

Well we survived Tobie’s first weekend back to work. She didn’t go to work Friday because she was feeling ill. I guess staying up for more than 24 hours can wreak havoc on your system. But it was still good training for me as she was out for the count! I’m hoping next weekend, Tobie’s body will allow her to sleep more. It’s not easy trying to sleep in the middle of the day.

The babies are doing great. We have had a few reflux episodes, which aren’t fun. The question then is do we try to feed them again? They are typically hungry after puking. Cole is on reflux medicine, Paige isn’t. We were going to give Paige, Cole’s medicine, but the dosage is based on weight, so we will have to wait for the peed appointment tomorrow.

The babies still hate taking medicine. I spilled an entire bottle of Poly Vi Sol on the floor because Paige was flailing her arms after taking a dose (Steph, we need more doctored Poly, it pays to know a pharmacist.). Now that corner of the room stinks! We are also giving them a bubble gum flavored diuretic. Paige has learned how to save it in her mouth and spit it up. Surprisely, Cole tolerates the medicine just fine. He isn’t happy, but he just takes it like a man-boy.

The babies are developing quickly. All of the sudden then have started to make eye contact. Previously we would only catch them looking at us through the corner of their eyes. Now they almost track us (I say almost, because most of the time it looks like they are looking through us, not at us). It’s much more satisfying seeing them looking at us. I can’t wait till they are more interactive. Even though it doesn’t show in the pictures, the babies have so many bald spots. I wonder how long it will take for them to lose all their hair?

The babies have also discovered their hands. Paige sometimes plays with her hands and has even been seen swiping at things. Cole has found new ways to swipe at bottles when he is done feeding. Both babies will latch onto your shirt and not let go. While this is cute, it’s not very convienent for putting them back to bed. The babies have been doing great with tummy time. Cole has superior head control. He can really keep that noggin in the air for a long period of time. It’s also evident when you sit them upright. They don’t fall over as easily now. Sometimes when they are on your chest, they move their heads from side to side. They look like baby bobble-head dolls. Kind of funny. They both are still dying to crawl. They get so frustrated during tummy time when they move their arms and legs and don’t go anywhere. They are going to have a blast when they have loco-motion.

Feeding is still hit or miss. We have spaced out their feeds a lot more which makes them much more hungry when it comes to feeding time. Sometimes they polish off 4 ounces, sometimes only 2 ounces. When they only take a few ounces, they will be much more hungry in just a few hours and our feed schedule will be off the rest of the day. Oh well, at least they are eating. As our peed has said, as long as they are eating and gaining weight, they are doing fine.

Cole is a crier, that is for sure. Paige only fusses when something is wrong. Cole like to cry, well for just about everything: hungry=cry, tired=cry, happy=cry, bored=cry, poopy diaper=cry, wet diaper=cry, fart=cry, laugh=cry (wait that one doesn’t make sense), wants to be held=cry, wants out of the bobby=cry, wants to watch CSI=cry (and when I say cry, I mean wail). My mom told me that I was like that too, but they would just stick a bottle in my mouth to quiet me down (I can only blame that for me being overweight now or maybe it’s the box of donuts I eat everyday, in any case thanks mom). I wish Cole would find more satisfaction in the taking the bottle, but most of the time, it’s a labor to get him to start sucking. His suck is still kind of poor (but improving). Many times he’s making the motion but nothing is coming out. It’s funny because if the babies finish a bottle, we feel such satisfaction. When they barely take anything from the bottle, we feel such a let down. Not in the babies but in ourselves. Weird huh? Who knew our well-being would be so contingent on the babies feeding.

Lastly, Tobie has had crazy dreams about the babies, and mostly about Paige (does that mean I’m supposed to be dreaming of Cole? Oh the crying, make it stop! Stop the insanity!). Last night for the 3 am feed, I had just got done feeding Paige and Tobie walks in the room. She’s like: “You didn’t feed Paige did you? I already have a bottle prepared for her”. I was like: “What are you talking about, you have been a sleep since 10 pm”. She looks around for a little bit and says: “Oh, I must have been dreaming”. She’s dreaming about preparing bottles for the babies? Wow, talk about dedication. I think I found the front runner for the “Mom of the Year” award.

Paige looking sweet and innocent. Look at those chubby legs!

    Homer where he shouldn’t be.

The dogs used to sleep upstairs with us. Now they sleep downstairs since the babies have been home. I think they are tired of being woken up in the middle of the night.

Quick update: Had a behavioral specialist meet the babies today. She said they looked real good (always a good feeling when a professional says that). She said Paige was pretty advanced and Cole was a little immature. Who knew coming out second would set him back so much! She said we shouldn’t force the babies to feed and to wait about 4-5 hours per feed. That’s kind of what we have been doing, so sweet! She’ll be back next week to go over some more stuff with us, but again she was pleased with their progress so far. Also had a follow up with the surgeon who performed their heart and hernia operations. He said they look great. He was really pleased with their scars as they are barely noticeable. As he put it: “I do good work”. This is the same doctor I made a comment to about surgeons being bad at circumcisions (oops!). Interesting fact: he also had a 1 pound 10 ounce baby about 12 years ago. It’s amazing how most of the people who work in the NICU are connected. Tobie starts the midnight to 7 am shift tonight. I should put up a poll on who do you feel more sorry for: Tobie, me, or the babies! (I have a feeling I would come in last).

    Play Time Over

    eric   May 24th, 2006      3 comments...sweet!

Cole: “Okay I think I got this crawling thing down. Paige I’m going to push you with my right hand, then once you are ahead of me, you pull me and wa-la, we have crawling”
    Paige: “ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ”

All the prepping in the world didn’t prepare us enough for the babies being home. It is so time consuming. The days and nights definitely blur together now. As soon as we finish one thing with the babies, it’s time to do it again. I cannot imagine how much more difficult it would have been with triplets (my hat is off to those with higher order multiples). It’s a never ending cycle! But you all know that already since most of you have children (except Greg and Chad).

The babies are definitely coming out of their shells. When Paige is awake, she is a lot of fun. Mommy has found out that 5 am - 7 am is her play time. Cole’s time is around 8 am. Why can’t these kids have their time say noonish? Tummy time is very frustrating for the babies. They either get upset or pass out. They want to crawl so badly, they start fussing and a fighting when they move their legs and arms and don’t go anywhere. The babies have rolled over already (thanks to their big heads). It’s funny to see the look on their face as it goes from wow that was cool to crying.

Speaking of crying, Cole cries all the time it seems. I think he may be just that type of baby. Paige does cry, but the majority of the time she makes the craziest noises (possibly Klingon?). I have begun to cherish quiet time. I cannot begin to tell you how frustrating it is when both babies are crying and you only have room to hold one of them. And of course Murphy’s law: when one baby cries and is comforted, the other baby will cry and want to be comforted as well.

Feedings are still hit or miss. Sometimes they take 3+ ounces, other times just an ounce. The peed wants them feeding 3-5 ounces per feed. We can’t come close to that mark yet. Our babies don’t actively want to be fed, they have to go over 3 hours for them to really want it, and then sometimes they only take a little, weird. Anyways, they are really good at telling you when they don’t want to be fed and we are very aware of that because the last thing we would want is to give them a food aversion (which seems to be a chronic problem in a lot of preemies).

We had another peed appointment today. It took over 2 hours. Cole weights 7 pounds 12 ounces, and Paige weights 8 pounds 12 ounces. The babies are gaining about 1/2 ounce a day. Ideally we would like them to gain around an ounce a day. “Babies we got some work to do!” The peed said both babies looked good. He did have to draw blood for some tests. That brought back some unpleasant NICU memories. Poor babies, I’m sure it was like reliving a bad dream for them. We did have Paige without O2 for a while this week. She kept ripping off her prongs. She was satting pretty good without the O2. I think we have an appointment with the pulmonologist in a couple of weeks. If I were a betting man, I would wager she’ll be off the juice for good by then. Cole on the other hand required more O2. He just hasn’t been looking too hot the past couple of days. He was satting around 90. We bumped up us O2 to 1/2 liter and he immediately started satting around 95 and started eating more. So the peed wants us to keep him on the higher O2 until we meet with the pulmonologist.

I’m sure there is more and I’m sure there are some funny things that happened, but who’s got the energy to remember things like that anymore! :) Must sleep, babies need to be fed in..ah crap, now.

    Fun fun fun.

Cole was taken to the doctor. He wasn’t looking right. His eyes were a tad dusky and he wasn’t taking his full feeds. We bumped up his O2 and started to look a little better but his breaths were still labored. We were just commenting last night about how he looked a little bloated. They are doing some tests right now but we think he might have some fluid on his lungs. He is on a diuretic, but he may have outgrown the dose he is on.

    More later.

Update 7:30 pm: Cole’s back and is doing good. He will be on double the O2 for a little bit. He did gain 5 ounces in one day so that is a clear sign he is retaining fluid. We gave him a bolus of lasik to get rid of the fluid and we’ll be upping his daily dose of aldactizide. He has another follow-up appointment with the peed tomorrow morning.

In other news, Paige was given the go ahead to start weaning the O2. She has been doing great at a lower setting. While in the NICU the doctors were always fond of saying: “The baby lets us know when it’s time to make a change”. I think that is so true as she has ripped off her nasal prongs 4 times in the past day. She even took a full feed with no O2 today and did great. The few times we have caught her with no O2, she is satting 100%. She should be off the O2 within 2 weeks (that’s just my guess, but there is no rush).

So, we have been home a week and a half and have been to the doctor 4 times already. Phew, this is tiring.

On a side note, I had to enable word authentication in the comments section. We got hit by a spammer who posted stupid comments by using a spam program (Joe I’m looking in your direction). This feature makes sure you are human! Who knew it would be that easy to determine whether or not you are human. So if you are leaving a comment, just follow the instructions by typing in the image that is displayed in the appropriate field. (so if you type it in wrong, does that revoke your human status?).
