Play Time Over

Cole: “Okay I think I got this crawling thing down. Paige I’m going to push you with my right hand, then once you are ahead of me, you pull me and wa-la, we have crawling”
Paige: “ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ”

All the prepping in the world didn’t prepare us enough for the babies being home. It is so time consuming. The days and nights definitely blur together now. As soon as we finish one thing with the babies, it’s time to do it again. I cannot imagine how much more difficult it would have been with triplets (my hat is off to those with higher order multiples). It’s a never ending cycle! But you all know that already since most of you have children (except Greg and Chad).

The babies are definitely coming out of their shells. When Paige is awake, she is a lot of fun. Mommy has found out that 5 am - 7 am is her play time. Cole’s time is around 8 am. Why can’t these kids have their time say noonish? Tummy time is very frustrating for the babies. They either get upset or pass out. They want to crawl so badly, they start fussing and a fighting when they move their legs and arms and don’t go anywhere. The babies have rolled over already (thanks to their big heads). It’s funny to see the look on their face as it goes from wow that was cool to crying.

Speaking of crying, Cole cries all the time it seems. I think he may be just that type of baby. Paige does cry, but the majority of the time she makes the craziest noises (possibly Klingon?). I have begun to cherish quiet time. I cannot begin to tell you how frustrating it is when both babies are crying and you only have room to hold one of them. And of course Murphy’s law: when one baby cries and is comforted, the other baby will cry and want to be comforted as well.

Feedings are still hit or miss. Sometimes they take 3+ ounces, other times just an ounce. The peed wants them feeding 3-5 ounces per feed. We can’t come close to that mark yet. Our babies don’t actively want to be fed, they have to go over 3 hours for them to really want it, and then sometimes they only take a little, weird. Anyways, they are really good at telling you when they don’t want to be fed and we are very aware of that because the last thing we would want is to give them a food aversion (which seems to be a chronic problem in a lot of preemies).

We had another peed appointment today. It took over 2 hours. Cole weights 7 pounds 12 ounces, and Paige weights 8 pounds 12 ounces. The babies are gaining about 1/2 ounce a day. Ideally we would like them to gain around an ounce a day. “Babies we got some work to do!” The peed said both babies looked good. He did have to draw blood for some tests. That brought back some unpleasant NICU memories. Poor babies, I’m sure it was like reliving a bad dream for them. We did have Paige without O2 for a while this week. She kept ripping off her prongs. She was satting pretty good without the O2. I think we have an appointment with the pulmonologist in a couple of weeks. If I were a betting man, I would wager she’ll be off the juice for good by then. Cole on the other hand required more O2. He just hasn’t been looking too hot the past couple of days. He was satting around 90. We bumped up us O2 to 1/2 liter and he immediately started satting around 95 and started eating more. So the peed wants us to keep him on the higher O2 until we meet with the pulmonologist.

I’m sure there is more and I’m sure there are some funny things that happened, but who’s got the energy to remember things like that anymore! :) Must sleep, babies need to be fed in..ah crap, now.

I am SSSSSSSssssssssooooooooooo impressed! Tummy time? ROLLING OVER???!!!

I can’t offer tummy time after feedings, or they will spew all over….
An hour later (when there’s a higher probability of having digested a small bit), they’re out cold - until the next feed!

Oh my dear lord does this post bring back memories… It gets better. It really does. I’m not going to say it’s all fun and games at 22 months, but it is better. At the very least we can sleep, and that makes a world of difference.

Best of luck to you, and your babies are ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!!! I put a link to you on our blog, and will be following Cole and Paige’s progress.

Wow, there is so much action at your house! I’m so impressed and don’t know how you guys do it all. I’m picturing the day we get to go home from the NICU and how busy it’s going to be. I have already asked my sister to stay with us for a little while. My hat and heart goes out to you guys!
