Paige: “Wait, that’s what Cole looks like? Wow, he’s got the look!”
Cole: “Is that good or bad?”

I think we just caught Cole giving Paige an uppercut!

Don’t make a spectacle

Is that a twinkle in her eye?

Yes I didn’t use the magical silver machine I blog from to generate the pictures above. They are 100% legitimate, the glasses have landed. Remember when we said the optometrist originally told us that she had been in the field for 15 years and she pretty much guaranteed we would cry when Paige put on her glasses for the first time because she would come out of her shell? Remember that? Do you? Well, Paige didn’t act any different. Yes we were going to cry, but we were going to cry for the wrong reasons. It had only been a few hours, maybe she needed more time? I could have sworn the eyeglasses manual said your baby will be able to see and interact within 15 minutes after taking the glasses out of the box. See, this is why I don’t read directions!

So we are trying not to think about whether or not she can see or can’t see. Tobie and I started talking, it could be worse and started rattling off other preemie problems we don’t have. Well, Tobie was getting Paige ready for bed and I asked her to get Paige dolled up for a quick photo shoot. Low and behold as I walked around the room, Paige started following me with her eyes. She’s never done that before. That’s a good sign and that’s where I leave you tonight. Oh btw, now that she has glasses, her IQ has gone up 40 points. That’s a fact about wearing glasses if you didn’t know.

Terrific Tuesday

“Yeah Swimming” “Oh…woopee…swimming..again”
You can love the monkey, you just can’t eat the monkey

Optical Prime: Quit asking. We don’t know when Paige’s glasses are coming. But I have a theory. Obviously these glasses have to be special since they are for such a special girl. These glasses are so special that the glass itself must be forged at the center of the Earth where pure sand is turned into the most perfect glass. It’s that or someone at the eye place forgot to place the order. :)

The Pool: We also went swimming as a family. It was so freaking cool. It looked like Cole actually tried to swim by kicking his legs. Paige just kind of tolerated being in the water. I wish I had some pics, but our photographer went back to Texas. Speaking of the little brother, he was fantastic with the babies this past weekend. See I was out of town this past weekend for, well, male bonding Vegas style (I would love to tell more but what happens in Vegas, well you know the rest), so he flew in to help Tobie out in my absence (no sickos, he had his own room to sleep in). Between him and Aunt Nancy, last week was a fantastic family week. We love having family spend time here, it makes a big difference in our lives. So if there are any others that want to fly into town, just say the word and we will have your room ready (I can’t promise we’ll wash the sheets, it’s hard to fit in a load of sheets with all the baby laundry).

The Food Trials: Last week it was pears. Paige seemed to like the pears a little more than Cole. This week is sweet potatoes. Cole seems to really like them. Paige, not so much. Cole still has his good eating days and his bad eating days, but he starting to come around. He’s been actually crying for the bottle. A few weeks ago, that type of cry meant “I crapped everywhere”. I think it’s a combination of us not worrying as much, Cole getting a little older, and all the great therapy he has been receiving from all the different EI therapists. We have another weight check next week so that will be the real test. Like the peed said, it’s about long term trends. He is so wise, he’s like my Yoda.

O2 Study: Tonight we are doing another overnight O2 study to see how the big guy does at 1/4 liter versus 1/2 liter. So far we are off to a great start. Last time at this time of the study I was camped out in his room because the alarm kept going off.

Eye Would Wait

Future Paige?
We used state of the art computer graphics to render an image of what Paige will look like with glasses

Tobie here: So it’s been a while since I’ve been a little frustrated. Okay…maybe not that long….but I’m trying! So no, we don’t have Paige’s eyeglasses. I ordered them on Monday. Paige and I went after her eye appt to pick out frames at the only store in the Valley that carries baby frames. We only had about 5 frames to choose from. About five minutes after we get home, the lady working at the store calls and says that she has another pair of frames that she forgot about. Why she couldn’t have shown us all the available frames when we went the first time is beyond me, but that’s life. So the next morning we load up and head back out this time taking Cole with us (which makes it a little more complicated) because unlike the previous day I have no one to stay back with Cole. The lady sees both babies and says “Oh my gosh…I didn’t know you had two!” I wouldn’t have had you come back”. Oh but you did, but in the end it was all good because the frames she didn’t show us the first time, were the ones we ended up picking out. All along this woman is telling us the glasses will be ready Friday and I spend the entire week pumping Paige up for them. She was a little worried about her looks, but I assured her she was the most gorgeous baby girl with or without fashionable eye wear. Friday afternoon rolls around…I call the woman to see if they are indeed ready before heading down to their shop. She says the FedEx box had arrived but she hadn’t gone through it. She was with clients, but promised me she would call back right away as I had explained to her we had another appt later in the day (Cole’s play therapy) and time was pressing. Well she never called back. I decided to pack up the babies and go there anyways. I walk into an empty office. Where are the clients? Where is my return phone call? Where are Paige’s glasses? All futile questions as the glasses aren’t in. Supposedly now Monday, possibly Tuesday. I thought it was a standard operating procedure to inflate the time it takes something to get done, that way you are always pleasantly surprised when it comes early. It’s just a little frustrating because now that we know she needs glasses to see, we want her in them ASAP. All in all my hopes and excitement for Paige’s sight are just postponed for a few days. Ahh, I feel better now, how about you?

A Few More Appointments

eric   August 23rd, 2006      1 comment...cool!

Cole had another pulmonology appointment. The doc said he sounded great and we are going to repeat the overnight study to see how he does with lowered oxygen. To be honest, I’m sure he will do fine at 1/4 liter versus the 1/2 liter he is at now, but we just want to make sure because the last time we tried to wean him, he just didn’t seem to do that well at the lower O2. So I’m guessing he’ll pass the overnight study and be at 1/4 liter in a few weeks.

We also had a peed appointment. Our original peed has been on vacation the past few weeks. He has missed all the excitement! He was quickly caught up to speed on everything. He isn’t allowed to leave us for another year! He said both babies looked great (he referred to Paige as robust again). Get this, Paige is in the 50th percentile (head, height, and weight) for normal babies. Did you hear that, our girl is normal (well, except her eyes). Paige now weighs 14 pounds 6 ounces. We were also given the green light to incorporate fruits and veggies into their diets. Cole now weighs 12 pounds 12 ounces. He has continued to put weight on each week. However, Cole has decided that growth charts aren’t for him because he feels they are culturally biased and he has refused to participate. I’m not sure how he gained weight since the last appointment because this past week his eating has sucked! But whatever, I’m not complaining (serious, he has been driving us nuts with his eating, or lack of).

So everything is going pretty good. We have Aunt Nancy and Cousin Roy from Chicago helping us with the babies this week. My brother flies in Friday for Daddy Boot Camp (his little girl is due next January, his first lesson is you have to wipe front to back, he has no idea what he is in for!). Paige gets her glasses on Friday. I’m hoping she can see with them, because if she can’t, well lets just not go there right now.

The eyes have it

eric   August 21st, 2006      5 comments...sweet!

Paige had another eye appointment today. This one was with a new eye doctor. He confirmed a lot of the suspicions we have had about Miss Paige. He said Paige has 20 / 800 vision. She is very, and I mean very near sighted. She can probably only see objects from about 6 inches away. This has definitely affected her development. We are going to follow up with this doctor in 2 months. Since we are now working with the Foundation For The Blind, we feel pretty comfortable in not seeing the doctor for a while. Paige was also fitted for glasses today. That’s right our little girl is going to be wearing glasses by the end of the week. We will also be doing some patching to help strengthen the eyes. We were also told that Paige should start to blossom when she starts wearing the glasses. Knock on wood, we can’t wait!

Friday Night Movies

eric   August 19th, 2006      7 comments...sweet!

In days long past, Friday nights meant going out, having some dinner (maybe a few drinks), maybe going to see a movie (and a few more drinks). Now with kids, that’s just out of the question. We have to create our own entertainment. So without further ado, here is a new movie . Apparently we’ve been taking more videos of Cole than Paige (To future Paige: But we love you just as much baby girl). We’ll have to rectify that by having a more Paige-centric video next time.

Freaky Friday (almost)

“You want me to drink that?”

Cole: Excuse us dad, we were trying to have a private conversation.

Cole is shocked at how cool Paige looks!

So it took a little over 7 months for it to happen. Cole decided to step up and be the big boy he is and eat more than Paige today. What a super stud! Okay, I can get off my high horse now. Actually it’s not so much he ate more than Paige, it’s that Paige decided to barely eat today. She slept most of the day and decided to chew on the bottle rather than suck. Maybe she is teething? Nope, nothing looks like it’s growing in her mouth. We also had another appointment scheduled with our retina specialist today, but we cancelled. Since we have another eye apointment Monday, we didn’t want to stress the princess too much. Eye appointments can be brutal for the little ones. If you don’t know what I mean, you are blessed. Trust me.
