GI Cole

eric   September 29th, 2006

We had a GI appointment the other day. It was more of an impromptu appointment because the nutritionist was concerned about Cole’s weight gain. Basically, Cole’s doing just fine. If you look at his past 6 month growth curve, it has sucked. But the past month or so we have started to make great gains with him with speech, physical, and play therapy. He now cries for the bottle, is much easier to feed, and eats much more regularly. Our nutritionist is very aggressive with preemies, trying to get them to their true weight by their 1st birthday. Unfortunately with all of Cole’s previous issues, I don’t think that’s going to happen. But the good news is I think we are more on course now. The GI doctor provides a good balance for us because he is pretty laid back about things. He did prescribe us Reglan. Remember when I thought Cole had some issues with his stomach not emptying the contents that quickly? Well this drug should allow his stomach to pass food quicker. It does have some side effects, so we are going to keep a close eye on him (irritability, loose stools, etc). Cole still only takes 3 ounces a feed, so the thought here is maybe he can take more per feed and get his stomach can grow (Paige was taking 3 ounces a feed the day we left the NICU in May to put it in perspective). We’ll see what happens with that.

On the Paige front, she made it a complete night without waking up to feed. Wow! I know what you are saying more sleep for you us, right? Not so fast, Cole still woke up 3 times to feed. Cole’s new thing is flipping over on his belly at night. He’ll wake up crying wanting to be flipped back over. I think we need to get PT on that because I’m tired of waking up to flip him like a pancake (and when I say I, I mean Tobie).

Oh, another one of our infamous readers (and commenters), had his first little girl today. Well, maybe little isn’t the right world as she was 8+ pounds. Congratulations Joe and Liz. We look forward to letting your daughter date Cole.

Glad things are getting better with Cole. Caitlin is also on reglan and it does help alot. I understand the frustration with 3 ounces. Caitlin still will only take anywhere from 2-3 1/2 ounces and she is 9 mos old almost 10 and 6 mos corrected. Also the whole flipping thing we finally got through that and Caitlin will now sleep on her tummy , I litterly had to flip Caitlin over a gazzillion times a night. I would try to use the sleep positioner but even sometimes she would roll over that.It gets better though it seems like forever but I think it was a couple weeks of that.

I am glad Cole’s eating issues are getting better. John does the opposite of Cole….he flips onto his back and we have to get up and roll him back to his belly.

Have you all heard of a reunion? I heard they do one but it might be every 2 years.

      Hi,

I have never posted on your blog before but thought that I may have some advice to help you guys.

My trio is 28 months. I first heard about you and your family from the triplet connection.

Any how….Not sure if Cole likes to be swaddled but my kids couldn’t sleep without being swaddled, and I mean swaddled tightly! This pervented them from rolling over. I also used the sleep positioners while they were swaddled as extra protection that they wouldn’t roll over.

Just a thought, maybe it will help!

Just thought I could offer a tip I have found useful for the rolling thing in the crib. We had the same problem with Nathan, so I place a long bean bag (the kind you warm for tired neck muscles) along his side he, which is the one he tends to flip onto. This way, if he tries to roll, he partially rolls onto the bean bag and ends up more on his side, and doesn’t get as frustrated (and then we aren’t getting up to flip him back!) Hope this helps,

Our son was born on his due date, weighing 10 lbs. 11.5 oz. He has a complex congenital heart defect, thus far has had two surgeries with another coming up this winter. His biggest struggle after the first surgery was eating. Not eating enough. He didn’t gain weight for a long time and actually fell off the weight charts. He went from the tip top to the cellar. He is now at the 3 percent range for his age. Just got to 25 lbs and he turned two in August. He still wears some 12 month pants - little butt. When we were first at the hospital, finally one doctor said - pull the feeding tube, let him figure it out. That worked. Our pediatrician recommended the pediasure and then once he was on solids, adding cheese and butter to stuff. Lots of calories. Basically, the doctors have been happy as long as he isn’t losing weight and he continues to reach other development points. Sorry to ramble on. I just want you to know that you are not alone trying to figure out weights. Ethan also had the problem of his stomach not emptying. he has now grow out of that.
