Dang Nipples–no, not mine!!

Tobie here: I hate new nipples. Paige has had her nipples for about longer than 4 months and you could drive a truck through the hole. Works nice for Mom and Dad because it literally takes less than 5 minutes to feed her a bottle since she barely has to suck, but I’ve read that when they get that worn, it’s time to replace them. And Cole….he dislikes silicon nipples so after an extensive search I found him latex nipples (fast flow). He was using the same nipples he was discharged from the NICU with. Yeah, that old and that slow (not to mention they were supposed to be disposable nipples and we’ve been re-using them for ~8 months). So I thought “maybe I can get more into him if he doesn’t have to suck so hard to get stuff out”. So last night I went on my nipple run and boiled my freshly bought nipples for the recommended three minutes. This morning Paige wasn’t able to suck her formula through the hole and only managed to squeeze out an ounce before passing out from exhaustion. Cole was able to get 2 oz out of his new nipples after 30 minutes of screaming, passing out and sleep-sucking, then waking up and screaming some more. Fantastic. I’ve been sitting here for ten minutes chewing on his nipples to soften them up and gagging on the taste of the rubber. And I’ve just been chewing on two of Cole’s nipples. Mama bird’s jaws hurt and I haven’t even made it to Paige’s nipples yet. Is there a better way? If my jaws hurt, I can only imagine their frustration and sore jaw muscles. Did I also mention that we are between feeding specialists and we won’t see anyone for about another three weeks? Did I also mention that I wasn’t able to get any solid food into either baby this morning and they haven’t really eaten since last night around midnight and it’s now after 10am? Did I mention some days I would pay someone to come feed my babies to end this frustration? Did I mention some days I don’t mind the thought of a G-tube? Okay that last one wasn’t true…I would never want invasive surgery performed on my babies to ease my frustration….we will get through this. Even if we spend our Friday and Saturday nights chewing nipples. Yes, Eric…I have big plans for us this weekend!!!

Desperately seeking new roommate!

eric   December 28th, 2006      3 comments...sweet!

Cole here: I am in desperate need of a new roommate. I would like a roommate that does not babble and discuss her lack of clothes, possible hairstyles, and cravings at the wee hours of the morning while I am trying to get my much needed sleep to grow and be strong. I would like a roommate that does not want to eat every four hours even during the night as I can go all night without waking up once hungry. My current roommate (while I should mention that she is adorable and has a fantastic personality– even at 3:30am she cracks the funniest jokes) has a completely different sleep schedule than me. I should mention that I am willing to wait four or five months for a possible roommate. Perhaps this time I will co-habitate with another guy.

Surfs Up

eric   December 26th, 2006      Comments Off

Where just months ago the babies lived in their bouncy seats, they now only use them to watch Baby Einstein in the mornings. It’s one of the few times of the day Tobie can leave the babies alone and do some stuff around the house. That is until we saw Cole riding his bouncy chair like a surfboard. He figured out how to squirm his way out of the straps. Like I’ve said multiple times in the past, this kid is non stop action.

Happy Holidays Blogosphere

eric   December 22nd, 2006      3 comments...sweet!

So here is our holiday card. Tobie always wanted a holiday card. I resisted when it was just the two of us, but caved in this year. To be honest, I didn’t realize there was this whole holiday card giving sect in our society until our friends starting having kids. Now we are part of the group think and send out holiday cards to the masses. Of course there is a back story on our first holiday card.

We had big plans for our first holiday card. Bought the outfits, got the holiday props ready, planned the action shots ahead of time. As time went on, we kind of pushed taking the pictures to the side. Okay I pushed to the side (what do you want from me, I’m a busy man). During the photo shoot, we couldn’t get the babies to cooperate. I know, I know, like its possible to get the two of them to smile, sit, and look at the camera at the same time. I should have done what I’ve seen other parents of multiples do, take individual pictures and Photoshop them together. So we took about 100 shots. To be honest, none of them came out like I was expecting. The topper was Cole wouldn’t smile. Remember that kid who smiles in every picture? Well he was having nothing to do with smiling on this photo shoot. Maybe he thought taking pictures in little red suits was a little contrived. I don’t know.

Since I delayed putting these cards together until the last minute, I totally botched the order. I had the first order sent second day air so we could get them out in time. Apparently we have more friends and family than I thought. I didn’t order enough cards. So I ordered more second day air. Of course this time I ordered less cards than the first time by mistake. Ugh! Turns out I’ve spent more on shipping than the actual cost of the cards! Next year, this is all going to happen in November and be much better planned out!

So if you didn’t get a card from us this year it’s because:

  • We didn’t have your address.
  • You moved! (Ryan/Shal, this means you)
  • Since we sent them out so late, you may get them after X-Mas.
  • You’ve been naughty.
  • Our mailing list is in alphabetical order and we only had so many cards to send out, so everyone with a last name R-Z is out of luck. (sorry to the Zenomosasmith family)
  • UPDATE: Apparently the post office now requires stamps on all pieces of mail. Some of you maybe receiving cards later than sooner.

So, we would like to wish you a happy holidays and thank you for all the warm and fuzzy comments and support throughout this roller coaster of a year. We look forward to spending next year with you all! You all rock!
