Baby Update

eric   December 17th, 2006

Since Cole realized he could pull himself up on things, he’s been non-stop action (I wish we would have named him Jackson so I could give him the nickname “Action Jackson”). He climbs on everything now, pillows, dogs, couches, toys, us, Paige, everything. We have this big mirror in the baby zone on the floor. Somehow he figured out how to pull himself up even on that. Spiderman’s got nothing on this kid! The big problem is, physically, he isn’t developed enough to be pulling himself up like he is. His balance isn’t that great and he doesn’t have a lot of stabilization muscles developed. As you can imagine, he’s had a lot of hard falls. If we leave the room for any amount of time, we have to put him in an activity center. He pulls himself up that quickly on things or he goes into attack mode and jumps on Paige. Paige enjoys that for about 2 seconds and then usually cries.

Speaking of Paige, she is a champion sitter now. I don’t know when it happened, but she can sit for very long periods of time nowadays. We can leave her on the floor in the sitting position and come back and she’ll still be sitting. It’s very cool. Since Cole’s so active, he is rarely in one spot long enough to sit. All of our therapists have said Cole is hyper. Hyper doesn’t begin to describe how active he is. We got Paige’s glasses back from the store. Unfortunately she still likes to rip them off and try to eat them. She was so solid with wearing them when she was younger. Oh those were the good times.

Nap times are almost non-existent at our house. The babies just freak out when their backs hit the cribs in the daytime. If they have fallen asleep in our arms, and we lay them in the crib, they might wake up about a minute later and freak out. What’s up with that? Each day we are able to get roughly 2 nap times about 20 minutes each. When 5 pm hits, they are so tired and unhappy. We’ve tried everything, but they just don’t want to sleep during the day. On the days we start to get a good nap, something always happens, a dog barks, a knock at the door, a phone call. Once they awake from a nap, they are up for good. Our downstairs isn’t the best place for naps, but Tobie’s limiting the number of trips she makes upstairs because of the pregnancy.

I can only imagine how difficult it’s going to get when Paige becomes mobile (luckily I think we are a few months away from that). The days are definitely getting harder. Some nights the babies’ bed time comes earlier if you know what I mean.

I feel your pain about naps! Ours still haven’t gotten much better, although one girl may now sleep for an hour - the other is up in 30 minutes. (No, it’s not consistent as to who’s the better sleeper.) I do let them fuss for up to 30 minutes in their cribs before getting them out… and it seems that this has worked, as Ivy (the bigger fusser) will 1st scream bloody murder when I put her in her crib until I walk out of the room, THEN will play happily with stuffed animals for 20-30 minutes, THEN will fuss for 15-30 minutes until I’m just about to rescue her and THEN boom, she’s asleep. Just in time for her sister to wake. :)

I know what you mean, Cooper is not good about taking naps anymore! It is frustrating, b/c I feel like I can’t get anything done. He isn’t sleeping so great at night anymore either! I hope it si just a phase!

Try a white noise machine, a VERY LOUD noise machine. We have ours rain mode and it prevents the kids from waking each other up (they sleep in same room) if one wakes up crying, covers up dg barks, door bells and telephone calls. We have it on as loud as it goes and it is on 24-7.
I remember the 5 pm “witching hour” of non stop crabbiness. Try the noise machine and hopefully they will begin good naps and be happier in the evening for you.

We just started using a water fountain to drown out some of the noise. We’ll give it another week, if it doesn’t help at all, I’m all for buying a white noise machine. Thanks!

Jsut some other pieces of advice about naps. I got this from another mom triplets. Get on a routine for naps in the morning and afternoon. We do breakfast (cereal and waffles) and 8:00 and then we do bottles at 10:30 and then down for naps. Even if tif they fuss, they stay there until about noon. Then have lunch around 12:30, bottles at
2:30 and then afternoon nap unitl 4:00. This nap is usually thier fussiest but I just leave them in their cribs and eventually th ey settle down or jsut talk to eachother. Another suggestion is to play really haed with them right before they nap and try to wear them out.

The best advice I got thought was to establish a routine. The kids now know when nap time is and they start to fuss when it gets close.

Boy can I relate to the dogs barking and the door bell ringing…EVEN THOUGH I POSTED: “Dont even think of ringing the doorbell”……….lol. Oh the joy! Speaking of naps, one of ‘em just woke up! Off to “feed.”
      Shannon:) Love those pics!

We use a white noise machine as well…waves. When I have the moniter on it almost puts me to sleep too!
Could they be teething? I know its the “cure all” answer, but it could also be why Paige is cramming her glasses in her mouth every other second…who knows, though. It could just as well be the phases of the moon or something.

Cole sounds more active than my Action Jackson! Unfortunately, both C&P sound similar to A&J with the whole napping routine, or lack thereof. If you come up with a solution, please post it–I have run out of ideas!
