One Year Checkup

eric   January 11th, 2007

I can’t believe it’s already been a year. Yes I know they just had their birthday, but there is just something about saying the babies just went for their “one year checkup”.

I guess it’s not that big of a milestone seeing as we’ve seen the peed just about every month since the babies have been home (sometimes 2-3 times a month).

Let’s start with Paige. Paige is now a whopping 20 pounds 7 ounces (Sorry Coop!). Okay, get this, she’s in the 55th percentile for weight, the 65th percentile for height, an the 85th percentile for head size. People those percentiles are for full term babies. Think if she came out at 35 weeks, she would have been 14 pounds! The peed wants her off of formula and to get all her calories from milk and baby food. He was concerned that she wasn’t very mobile and thinks it attributed to her vision issues. He said it’s pretty common for kids with vision issues to be delayed in developing things that are more sight related like crawling, rolling over, etc. He also observed that Paige had stranger anxiety. Surprisingly this is a good trait to have and was pleased she had it.

Onto Cole. Well as you can probably guess, Cole was in the 99th percentile for weight. Maybe one day that will be fact, but truth is, Cole’s barely hanging on the adjusted growth charts at 16 pounds 5 ounces. His growth has really plateaued. No real news here, right? We’ve started incorporating milk into this diet and actually reduced his calories some. He’s doing a little better eating, but his eating skills are far from spectacular. Remember how Paige has stranger anxiety? Yeah, not so much with Cole. That kids loves everything and everyone.

Since we’ve been seen by some doctor or another just about every few weeks, this yearly checkup didn’t produce anything really that new. We don’t see the peed for another 3 months.

In other news, the March Of Dimes is having their WalkAmerica campaign to raise money for prematurity. Unfortunately we will not be walking this year because the walk is around Tobie’s due date, end of April (and like I’m in condition to walk more than I normally do). I was kidding around with Tobie that we are going to sponsor another preemie blog’s family, but they would have to write an essay on why we should sponsor them. Let the campaigning begin!

WOW Paige’s stats are awesome! My 24 weeker will be 3 in June and he weighs 24 pounds! He’s still under the 5th percentile in weight and is in around the 30th percentile for height! And he eats like a horse! lol. Go Paige go! lol

Not mobile due to vision? With a noggin in the 85th percentile, that’s a load to try and move!

      Pam - that’s right, I didn’t think of that!

Oops… did I say Cooper was 20.4? I should have lied and said he was 20.14 so that he would win the weigh-off!

Oh well, we will reliquish the title for now. Be assured we will be stuffing him with chocolate chip cookies this weekend so he can beat Paige! Kidding of course, way to go Paige on the weight!

Oh yeah, I agree with Pam on the head issue. Can you imagine carrying around a melon in the 85th percentile when your weight is in the 55th %ile for weight? At least her neck muscles will be strong!

Just wanted to try to ease your mind and tell you not to be too concerned about Cole’s weight, yah right. Anyway, one of our DD’s, born at 29w6d was only 16 lbs. at one year, and at 15 months is 17 lbs. 10 oz. I used to worry all the time, but don’t anymore, she is fine and the peds aren’t worried. As long as he looks healthy, other than a few ribs showing, he will gain some day. I always think of the many people I know who were 2 lbs at birth and now are so overweight.

      Hope this helps a bit,

      Jennifer

Where should I send my essay? I’m walking this april with my survivng triplet born at 23 weeks 6 days. We can add you to our team. And by the way, he is not 17 months old and weighs 19 lbs, he seems to have plateaued as weel, but the peed is not concerned. Your babies are doing great!

If you don’t have time to write a nice blog on “why we should sponser you”, liquor always works

Eric & Tobie, Sponsor us! I have 26 month old triplets. I have followed your blog from the time the babies were born, but I suppose Wiscouse will win (I followed them too)! I just started our blog a couple weeks ago and it’s fun although I don’t think many people are reading mine. Thanks for inspiring me!
Don’t worry about Cole’s weight, my son Ethan weighs about 22 lbs (he started out at 2.6). I agree with Peed on Paige’s not walking having to do with eye issues. Addison didn’t walk until almost 16 months. She wasn’t born with crossed eyes but slowly over time they started to cross more and more and we just had eye muscle surgery this past Dec. Our P/T said it was hard for her to judge where the floor was partly because we have woodfloors, rugs and mats and those changes in color/thicknesses made it hard for her. Anyway it happened she just had to go slow and build up confidence — I’m sure Paige will too!
Anyway congrats on one year old and the new arrival on the way!

Paige is killing me on the scooter. What a precious face. And the pic of Cole in the tub chewing on the toy…look at those big eyes! The pics are great. The news is even better. I have already started on my walk america stuff. We walk on May 12th here. Our team is Miracles for Miles. Thought that might be catchy. We have to support all these babies that are born so very early! I’m bugging everyone I know. :):)
      Have a great weekend guys!
      Shannon
