Days Of Doctors Gone By

eric   February 7th, 2007

We had a couple of doctor appointments today. It was a long day. First up was our developmental evaluation with the incredible Dr. E. I won’t bore you with all the details, but basically the babies are developmentally behind in a multitude of areas and she fully expects them to be totally caught up by the next visit in 6 months! Nice! She also noted how much they have improved since our last appointment. Nice again! She did talk to us about how Paige has stranger anxiety. Not nice!

Apparently this isn’t your normal run of the mill freak out when she’s around strangers. She’s got a pretty bad case of stranger anxiety. We’ve noticed it has been getting worse. What can we say, she only feels comfortable around mommy and daddy. Not sure what we can do to help her with this. Any of you want to come over and be alone with Paige for a few hours at a time?

She also talked about Cole’s growth (or lack there of). He’s barely on the adjusted charts. Unless anything radically changes with his weight gain, we are going to see an endocrinologist in 6 months to get evaluated and talk about HGH (just going to talk about it). Do any of you have an experience with HGH? If so, please leave a comment or shoot me an email. Thanks.

After that we had our pulmonology appointment. Paige is officially done with pulmonology, forever! Cole will now be getting a smaller dose of pulmicort until RSV season is over, then he should be pretty much done with pulmonology like this sister. If we keep continuing on this course, no doctor is going to want to see us again! Oh how sweet that day will be!

We got a few emails about starting Cole on Pediasure. Who knew this drink is so popular? It’s good to know they make a generic version that’s a tad cheaper. We also have an inside source to the Pediasure factory and may get a discount on the product (don’t fail us, you know who you are!). Today wasn’t the greatest eating day for Cole since his schedule was all out of whack because of the long day at Children’s Hospital. We’ll have to see how much the little guy can drink tomorrow with his new diet to make sure yesterday wasn’t a fluke!

Ask about Carnation Instant Breakfast for Cole. Our Ped reccomended it for our guys when they were younger..It tastes better, and is cheaper too!!

Tobie asked about HGH on our blog. Honestly no one has mentioned it to us, and I don’t know too much about it.

I do know another preemie who was in the NICU with us. He was a 27-weeker who is right between H and E in weight. He has had significant kidney issues since birth and wasn’t growing despite taking in adequate calories.

I asked our peed about it. He said that it would only be an option IF the girls were taking in enough calories to grow, but weren’t growing. Our problem is getting the calories into them. This is why I think the g-tube would be considered before the HGH. ???

This is just my understanding. I haven’t researched it a ton.

How does Paige show her anxiety? I’ve only met her twice, but she seemed so fine with being held by me, my mom, Rich…or was it not an issue then?

My son is on HGH. Check out these 2 groups. They both have email lists and you can get lots of questions answered:

We started stranger anxiety today..I had to go into germ infested work to sign off on my extended mat leave and she took one look at my supervisor and burst into tears. I turned the stroller away and continued my conversation and as soon as he looked at her again, she screamed. He’s not -that- scary. Then she started doing it with my neighbours whom she has been around nearly every day since she came home.. very odd.

Our developmental specialist says stranger anxiety starts around a year old and can last up to 18 months.
