We had another follow-up appointment with the GI clinic today to talk about Cole’s nutrition. See we kind of got a little reprimand for putting Cole on Pediasure. His little body just can’t handle the osmolality of the milk based products (I’m not even sure what osmolality is, if I’m using the term correctly, and why it’s a problem). Anyways the conclusion Tobie and I have come up with is Cole hates his formula. Hate hate hates it! That was the main topic of discussion today. The nutritionist gave us the okay to put him on some other hypoallergenic formulas that maybe are a little easier on Cole’s digestive system. Today we put Cole on Similac® Alimentum® Hypoallergenic Formula. Like always, he did really good eating today with the dietary change. I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but sometimes this kid seems like a one hit wonder if you know what I mean! We’ll see what tomorrow holds.
While at the GI appointment, the NP noticed Cole’s ears were a little red inside. “Is Cole irritable lately”? A little. “Has he been coughing”? Just started last night. “Any congestion”? Just started last night. She wanted us to go see our peed. Luckily our peed’s office was in the same parking lot. We called and said we are walking over. Not so quick! No appointments until later in the day. Ugh. So we went home and came back to the peed’s office. She confirmed that Cole is definitely getting a little sick. His lungs sound great, so that’s good. Hopefully this just a standard cold. The peed prescribed some amoxicillin for Cole’s ear infection. On a side note, the peed we saw is also pregnant. She kind of insinuated that we were breeders! That’s a story for another day. It’s about 10:30 PM and waking up a few times every hour. It’s going to be a long night.

look at those little biscuits all zonked out! bet mom and dad wanted to snuggle in too!!
I don’t know if it has anything to do with your problem but my boys will not eat the powder formula. Just won’t do it. In the NICU they were given the premixed and when I got home I tried to use the powder, they both boycotted it and only drank enought to keep them from starving. I was very concerned. I called everyone I knew and everyone, even the doctors told me it should make no differance that they didn’t know and it was not the formula. Yeah right. After 3 days I went out and bought the premixed and the eating began again. I tried later to switch them to powder again when they were a little older. Still a no go. Just a thought, maybe he does not like the grainy consistency if you are using powder.
Hi Eric and Tobie,
Hallie had the same basic issue with formula. Her doc kept trying to put her on calorie-enriched stuff (neosure, etc) and then hypoallergenic formula (nutramigen) and no matter what we bought (and how much it cost us), she was on strike. She would only eat what she ate in the hospital (Enfamil AR ready-to-feed). We literally bought and returned the same cans and then bought them again at Target, all within 3 days. Anyway, has anyone put Cole back on what he had in the NICU? And I agree with butterfly girl above—the graininess of the powdered stuff on its own is yucky to her (though we sneak some in, along with breast milk, to boost the calories and goodness of the RTF AR and she doesn’t seem to mind it). Anyway, good luck with the Cole feeding issue—and tell him we hope he feels better!
Yikes, Alimentum is expensive stuff. I am trying to transition Presleigh to rice milk (currently awaiting a nutritionist appointment at Children’s Hospital) and in the meantime, I talked to the pharmacist about calories/proteins/fats/vitamins in order to stop mixing the rice milk with Enfamil Lactose Free… we spent about 45 mins pouring over some books he had and they all said basically the same thing… so we’ve switched to 50% rice milk and 50% Ensure - at least til we can get Miss P eating more food. Our issue is different in that she is gaining (she’s nearly 25 lbs at 13 months), however, she just isn’t eating food.
Anyways…
I love the pics of the kids asleep at the doctors *laugh* I would love a nap at the docs.
And congrats on 28.5!
Oh and what I had also meant to say was that we got the lactose free Ensure that was High Protein. So if he can’t assimiliate or osmolatitate or whatever the word is the milk, did the doc not suggest a lactose free version?
WHAT ?? I MUST CALL YOU TODAY TO HERE ABOUTH THIS PREGNANT LADY NP…..

Wow, in these pictures more than others, Paige definitely looks older than Cole. I think it is just the way they are sleeping - but with him all balled up, he looks like a baby, and her spread out - she looks like a toddler.
Hopefully this latest change will be the trick…
