Cole’s doing much better on the new formula. Our goal is 30 ounces a day, he’s at about 20 ounces a day. Before the switch he was around 10 ounces a day. This formula switch also coincided with us changing the delivery method of his prevacid. Now we know he’s getting his full dose. So what’s the true reason he’s eating better? Don’t know, but I’m sure I’ll be writing a post next week on how crappy his eating is. It’s a vicious cycle!
Today when I came home from work, Tobie and the babies toddlers were in the front room. Cole was standing up on his walker and totally got excited to see me as I walked through the front door. How cool is that? Then later when I was in a different room talking to Tobie who was with Cole, Cole was pissed he couldn’t see me and was calling out to me. How cool is that? Cole’s really starting to interact with us. If we clap, he claps. If we bang on the table, he’ll bang on the table. If we go “hey”, he goes “hey”. We could do that for hours! He’s also on the verge of walking. He’s able to cruise the couch with just using one hand for balance. I’m sure one day he’ll just be walking.
And Miss Paige our little chatterbox. She’s so proficient at saying “dada“, and what’s even more amazing, I think she actually says it in reference to me. She’s also rolling and crawling all over the place. No where near the proficiency of her brother, but she’s making the progress we knew she was capable of. Her stranger anxiety is still around. She’ll still freak out around certain people. We’re trying to leave her alone more during the day. She’s not happy about it, but seems to adjust once she realizes she’s on her own in the baby zone.
We also went to get new eyeglasses for Cole. Don’t worry this isn’t going to be another crazy eyeglass store experience. We found a new eyeglass store. One where they don’t close for lunch, and one where it’s 1/3 the price with a much better warranty. That’s right, Cole’s new specs cost 1/3 his previous pair, yeah. How cool is that? They’ll even warranty any damage to the pair for a full year. The other place only had one lens replacements within a year of purchase. Why the eye doc told us to go to that first store is beyond me (especially when he said he’s heard some bad customer service stories from his patients). We should get that new pair shortly.

Congratulations on all the new developments. You guys better get to babyproofing or you’ll end up like us someday with 21 Matchbox Cars shoved down the toilet!
Okay, about Cole and his eating? Just curious if you ever have given him a probiotic? The reason i ask is that all the antibiotics that would have been given to him in the NICU would have wiped out all the good bacteria that naturally passes from mother to child. I just read a groundbreaking study out of Germany (did you know Google translates into English? What a GEEK, right?) They gave premature babies Lactobacillus Reuteri and found a dramatic reduction in acid reflux and food intolerance as the body colonized with the right bacteria that should be present at birth in normal circumstances. You can get that at Whole Foods in the refrigerator section by Nature’s Way. Just thought I’d pass that on!
Michele,
I’ll run that by our GI our doctor at our next appointment. We’re under strict orders not to do anything without their approval.
How you have time to read medical journals in other languages is beyond me. Maybe you should have another kid with all that free time?
I’m with Michele’s suggestion about the probiotics, I’ve read in a number of places of how much that helps with sorting out digestive systems in preemies that have been subjected to significant medical interventions/drugs/procedures that require antibiotics and being especially helpful in filling diapers properly (I’m sure you’ll be thankful for that ;-)).
Eric- don’t be surprised if he isn’t too receptive. The reason I was reading in German is that American doctors aren’t up on this stuff. Germany is actually going to start putting lactobacillus reuteri in it’s infant formula.
The whole reason I ran across this is my big, fat, full term singleton had acid reflux, cradle cap, eczema, and food intolerances. I couldn’t understand how this could be given that the others were premature and never had any problems. This is when I ran across studies in Germany on the acid reflux/digestion link to lack of good bacteria. Most of the bacteria is transferred from mother to child in utero before they are born. But I was on antibiotics for strep throat right before the baby was born. This would have wiped out the bacteria I should have transferred to him.
I started supplementing his formula with lactobacillus reuteri at six months old. Within 2 months I was able to put him on regular milk formula and he’s never had an outbreak of eczema since. This is when it dawned on me that what do most premature babies have in common? They all are on antibiotics in the NICU if they are there for any length of time. What’s the one thing that a huge number of preemie babies have in common? REFLUX!
So I set out to find some studies that would prove this and this is why I went straight to Germany. Sure enough, there they were. I have a few twin moms that are now supplementing too, because I can’t wait for the medical establishment here to get on board in America. I’m running my own “medical study”. LOL! Plus, why would the American medical establishment do that? Then they wouldn’t be making millions of dollars selling acid reflux drugs.
So now I’m giving you an inner glimpse of a mad woman. Maybe I should have a few more. :0
I have also heard wonderful things about probiotics! You should call and see what they have to say! I don’t think it could hurt!
Just curious what the new delivery of Prevacid is…we have to go back on it, and I am dreading getting that into him again as well…..
Sheri,
Instead of the solutab, we are now using the capsules. We break up the capsules and put the little pellets in a spoonful of applesauce or yogurt.
We just never knew how much he was actually getting before because squirting it in his mouth wasn’t full proof and the solutabs never really disintegrated.
Thanks Eric,
We tried that, but my son has such texture issues and he would spit it back out- very frustrating…we actually are trying the solutabs the Dr said we could mix it in 1 tablespoon of yogurt which is nice and smooth and he usually can handle, so we’ll see….thanks:)
