There’s No Weekends With Babies

eric   April 28th, 2007

Oh how true, there is no weekends with babies. Being a parent means being on the clock 24/7. Why didn’t we go on vacation before getting pregnant? What was that? We would go later? When is later? Other than being on the go all day and night, things have been going really well. Blogger sucks like usual, haven’t been able to post for a while. I had to download a 3rd party program to interface with blogger’s system (reminder: get new blog going ASAP). Anyways, you don’t care about geeky stuff, you just want baby news.

Drew is a dream. In fact, his new nickname is Dreamy Drew. You can call him Double D for short. He’s pooping like 10 times a day. Every time he eats it’s another blow out. I guess it’s good the plumbing is working. He’s also feeding every 3 hours. Tobie’s breast feeding (bless her heart) and pumping every other feed. Drew’s already eating 2–4 ounces a feed. Holy moly! Do you realize for the first 5 months post NICU, that’s more than Cole was taking each feed? This experience couldn’t be anymore different. I’ll save that talk for another post. We had our first peed appointment this week for Double D. He has gained back all his birth weight (babies tend to lose about 10% of their birth weight and it takes about 2 weeks to recover that weight, he did it in 6 days, what a stud). I’m thinking NFL for this one. Dr. F took a quick look at him and said (and I quote): “He looks great, you guys look great. Normally I would have you back within a month, but since you guys are old pros now, I’ll see you in 2 months”. Wow, when we brought P & C home from the NICU we were in his office twice a week it seemed. I hate to compare the babies, but it’s all so fresh.

Tobie’s still recovering. It’s going okay. Her body has been through a lot the past couple of years. It’s going to take sometime to rebuild her, but we can do it. She’s been really good about not picking up the babies (the last thing we need is for her incision to rip open, that would be our luck, right?). I’ve been home all week with her. In that time, Paige has become a daddy’s girl. This past week has been a lot of work, but actually we’ve had a lot of fun as a family. The babies and I play all day while Tobie always seems to be pumping, breast feeding, or changing Drew’s diapers. Okay, maybe it’s been more great for the babies and I than Tobie. Hey, if I could breast feed I totally would. We’ve started the hunt for a full-time mother’s helper. Our current girl (who we love), will be leaving us sometime in May. She’s only here for a few hours a day, but is sorely missed when she isn’t here. We already have a few good leads (thanks for lighting the fire Michele).

The babies have been doing great, well except for today. Cole had projectile vomit 3 times today and a really bad rash that came and went. Not sure what’s going on, but we’re ready to take him in to the peed’s office tomorrow morning if he wakes up sick. Even going through what we did last year, with all the procedures done to our babies to help them live, it absolutely breaks our hearts to see our babies in discomfort. Poor Cole today, he would bury his head into my chest, he would fall into the fetal position on the floor, so sad. This kid is always on the go and doesn’t like to be in one spot for too long, seeing him a little uneven today just really sucked. In other news, the kid is walking big time. He can walk from one end of the room to the other. He just bounces off of walls and furniture to get where he’s going. I’ll be sitting in the recliner and all the sudden I’ll see Cole’s little head pop up from the side or I’ll catch him walking out of a room by himself. It’s such a good feeling to see him cruise around all proud of himself. There was a time when we didn’t know if things like this were possible, and now look at the big guy.

Paige is doing great as well. She loves to walk, just not on her own yet. She cruises around in her walkers and loves it when you hold her hands and walk around with her. Her anxiety is been coming and going the past week. I think she’s a little affected by Drew’s arrival. She definitely is the more sensitive of the two. She’s just been freaking out every time we put her down in her crib. She doesn’t like to be left alone lately. This is what I find amusing, we can put her down for a nap, sometimes she’ll scream bloody murder cry for 20 minutes before we give up on the nap, but as soon as I sit down with her she’ll fall asleep on my chest. I can talk, move, cough, sneeze, whatever, and she’ll not wake up. If she’s in her crib and I sneeze from downstairs, she’ll wake up. I blame all the kangaroo care we gave him in the NICU! Just kidding, but the babies sure love to fall asleep on us.

Its amazing how places that are supposed to specialize in things for kids can manage to screw things up for them and you want to go Poltergeist on them.

      Glad its all better though.

Now that’s a right proper update! Man I just realized how hard it’s going to be keeping track of another baby. It’s like 3 blogs in 1.

      Keep up the great work!

Do you guys live anywhere near a college or university?
I have worked in the career services office of a few of them and we post jobs like what you are looking for all the time. It might be hard to find someone now since the semester is almost over but it might be worth a shot.
