    Attention Comparison Shoppers

    eric   June 29th, 2007      8 comments...sweet!

Drew 2.5 months old, Cole 8.5 months old in these shots, both wearing the same outfit. One is going to be my linebacker, the other my distance runner. Drew is almost 15 pounds here, Cole around 12.5 pounds. It’s just mind blowing to compare the two. I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t help it.

Wish us luck - UPDATED (again)

    Paige Sick

Paige has a really bad ear infection and about 6 teeth coming in at once. If you don’t hear from us by morning, send help. It’s going to be a rough night.

UPDATE 6 AM Tuesday: It was a long night but we made it. All hail baby Advil.

    Paige Happy

UPDATE 8 PM Wednesday: Looks like operation “get kids sick while not in RSV season to build up immune system” has been a success. Yes a little too much of a success. Paige has been miserable the past few days. She’s had a pretty bad fever that really spiked today. We were up with her pretty much the entire night. We brought her back to the peed today (It’s great they have like 10+ peeds there, we can always get in). Her ear infection has progressed and is much worse today. It’s so bad that her other ear drum ruptured. Ouch! Peed said it should heal on it’s own with time. Looks like tonight we’ll be sleeping together on the recliner again. Cole also has been sick with the rotavirus again. Luckily this time it’s just diarrhea (there is something I don’t find myself saying enough: luckily it’s just diarrhea!). We even had our first Baby Ruth incident when I gave the kids a bath tonight. They must have left this chapter out of What To Expect The Toddler Years.

    6 Is Enough

    eric   June 26th, 2007      7 comments...sweet!

I'm sure most of you heard that a couple delivered sextuplets in Phoenix a few weeks ago. We share a lot of the same doctors. Anyhoo, here is a video interviewing the mom and our favorite neonatologist, Dr. Leonard. We used to kid that we would name Drew, Leonard after him (even though that's not his first name, funny right?). I meant to post a long time ago about how great the staff of our NICU is. Where has the time gone? It's on my list of things to do (as long as we stop popping out kids, I should have the time right?) Tobie has been trying to get down to the NICU and visit with the babies, but something always comes up (she was pregnant, she gave birth, they are doing a major reconstruction of the NICU, it was RSV season, they delivered sextuplets, it's hot outside, etc). So take a look at this Today Show video to see our favorite neonatologist and yours, Dr. Leonard in action (Dr. L if you happen to read this, smile a little more!). Oh, does the mom look like a deer in the headlights or what? I still think she has no idea what she's in for! I wonder if the nurses are telling her to have date night now while they can. hahahaha.

On a side note, I really don't like Meredith on the Today Show (I don't think Matt likes her either). I miss Katie (even though I don't like her on the evening news).

Sweet whispers to start the morning

    tobie   June 24th, 2007      10 comments...sweet!

Tobie here: Just whisper sweet nothings in my ear first thing in the morning and geez! sets the whole day off right. That was Drew whispering in my ear in case you were wondering. He was cooing and smiling at me in bed for about an hour this morning. That has to be the best way to wake up. So the three kids and I are enjoying waffles this morning while letting Daddy sleep in. How great is that?? So something interesting I've noticed lately. I normally have P and C sit next to each other in their highchairs for meals. P has a tendency to throw her sippy cup on the floor but lately she's putting it on her tray where C can easily grab and drink it. Sharing!! This morning I just caught him giving her his waffles. Can you feel the love?

So something I'm really bummed about. My parents gave us my sister's old Little Tikes house/slide set which is so cool for playing chase and hide-go-seek and learning not to freak out around slides. My mom washed it down at their house because they used it outside and we were planning on using it inside our house because it's so freakin' hot. There was still water trapped inside so we kept it outside our house for a few days to dry it out. Then we put it together (no easy feat) and realized there was still water in it, disassembled, re-dried outside, and reassembled only to discover that it now smells like cat urine. Bad. I didn't know that smell was cat urine, but my girl told me that once you smell cat urine on stuff you don't forget the smell. So we wiped it down with antibacterial wipes, still smells. So now my mom suggested disassembling it again and bringing it to their house to soak in a bleach solution. I don't know if the cat got to it at their house or ours so this may be futile. We looked it up online to see how much a new one would cost and these things are $180 plus shipping. Wow! I'd love to save it…we'll see. By the way…the Little Tikes website is a dangerous place for a parent trying not to spend money!

    Paige walking update

    tobie   June 21st, 2007      7 comments...sweet!

Babies 2 toddlers and a baby at playSo happy to be 2 months old!

Tobie here: Quick post. Today Paige figured out how to stand from the sitting position with no assistance. I’ve got two official walkers on my hands!! In other fabulous news, Drew started smiling today or maybe it’s gas, stay tuned.

On a side note: we found our third scorpion in the house in the last ten days. I’m horrified. I want to grab all my babies and huddle in my bed to keep them safe.

On another side note: it is supposed to be 115 degrees here on Friday.

    2 months - UPDATED

    eric   June 19th, 2007      6 comments...sweet!

Our baby boy is 2 months old today!!! He’s growing up so fast! Part of me wishes he would stay this young and cute forever! Makes me want another……j/k! :)
Wednesday Update: We had our two month checkup for Drew today. He’s 14 1/2 pounds and 2 feet long. That puts him in the 96th percentile for weight and the 85th percentile for height. That’s just sick (in a good way).

    What?

Tobie here: Today was a rough Monday. We got off to a late start this morning and I don’t think we ever caught up. Yesterday afternoon we spent a few hours at my parents’ house swimming and having dinner. I convinced my mom that the babies need to spend time with their grandparents on a regular basis. I think it’s important for them to grow up around family other than Eric and I. So during the summer we are going to start going to their house for Sunday evenings. Hopefully we’ll settle into a routine and P and C will come to look forward to it. Anyways we got home late and the babies slept in late which caused Eric to go to work late….and so on.Guess which one is Paige and which one is ColeFather’s Day was a flop too. I bought those plaster hand print things and was planning on making hand prints of the babies for Eric to put up at work. Great in theory but the babies have to hold perfectly still for over a minute. Paige dozed off for a second so I got a great footprint of her gigantic foot, Cole’s footprint was unrecognizable because he wouldn’t hold still (squirmy wormy in the house), and Drew was impossible to do without help. So Daddy only got one footprint of one of his three babies. It’ll get better in years to come when the babies make their own disastrous creations and they can take all the credit.

The Gang!Today we took everyone to the park to feed the ducks. We were hoping that they would actually throw the bread to the ducks which is a great therapy skill. Mostly I was hoping they would focus on the ducks and not on eating the bread. Paige was cracking up every time the ducks quacked which was AWESOME and Cole mostly squinted in the sun and looked like he just wanted to go back into the car. I’m so glad that now they know what ducks are. We also introduced them to fish yesterday with my brother’s fish tanks. That was cool because they were pointing to the fish as they were swimming around. Life experiences!!

PaigeLast nifty thought before bed…Paige finally started to seat herself in one of her little cars. She’s been working really hard at getting her leg over the car seat and claps every time she gets it right. Then today she learned how to push herself around in the car. What a smart girl!! I should mention that Cole has learned to sit in the car a while back but he still looks at you after he climbs in like “Hey, what are you waiting for? Push me Mommy!“.

baby spooningDrew still continues to be pretty fussy. It seems now that when he’s awake he is mostly crying. I feel so bad for him and really cherish the moments he’s alert and happy. We’ve found that one trick in getting him calm is to blast rap music. The more base the better. He’s our little OG, Original Gangsta. And yes, we’ve tried other music and it doesn’t calm him; it has to be rap music. Word, yo!

    Cutie Pies

    tobie   June 15th, 2007      11 comments...sweet!

Tobie here: My days are soooo short. I only have 9 weeks left with my girl J, who by the way is fabulous. Eric likes to call her my corporation. I am trying to schedule as many appts and activities as humanly possible while she is still with us. Nap times for the babies have become project time for the adults. Luckily for me she is as task oriented as I am. We made a list of all the projects and places we want to go on non-therapy days. Hopefully we can get it all done before she leaves us. We're organizing the house, cooking dinners (which for y'all that know me is HUGE because I'm not the best cook) and getting out in the real world. It's very rewarding, but oh so exhausting.

    A week in review:

Monday: we took the kids to the park because it was a relatively cool day (you know, low t0 mid 90s). We had the park all to ourselves and the slides were in the shade. We made the mistake of sending Cole down a slide by himself instead of going down with him. He totally freaked out even though the time between letting go of J's hands at the top and sliding into mine at the bottom was only a split second. Seriously the slide was only about five feet high. After that first attempt he was shaking and would not even consider another slide. Paige saw all this go down and she started sympathy crying. It was a disaster.

Also on Monday I had scheduled an appt with a child safety specialist. This guy comes to the house and advises us on what to child-proof in each room. He had a lot of great ideas and products. He also is a car seat specialist and I had him take a look at my car. He was horrified with Drew's car seat and temporarily fixed it, but said that the third row was not designed for an infant seat and Drew's seat would inevitably tilt again and become unsafe. I have since made an appt with the local fire station to switch Cole's seat with Drew's seat. It should be interesting trying to coerce Cole to crawl into the trunk and get in his car seat. I may have to add 20 minutes onto our getting out the door time.

Tuesday: my BFF's (best friend forever) parents came for a lovely visit. I hadn't seen them in over 3 years so it was really nice to hang out. It was super great getting parenting advice from my BFF's mom because she raised 5 kids really close in age so it was almost like having multiples. One great tip I got from her was giving Drew a nightly bath to relax him and help him sleep longer. More on this under Drew's update below.

Wednesday: my girl J and I went car shopping. Am I getting a new car? Hopefully someday, but not in the near future (insert tear here). I wanted to be prepared when Eric asks me what car I think would be best when the time comes for a new car. You would not believe how many people have told me I need a minivan for my three car seats so I felt obligated to go check it out. I think minivans are the most hideous looking vehicle out there . I was fully prepared to hate it. I now absolutely love minivans. It was so practical and awesome on the interior. The second row has two bucket seats for car seats and it scoots forward making the third row easily accessible without having to crawl in like the Tahoe. And don't get me started on the trunk space, convenience features, the automatic opening doors, and the spacious trunk. Aagghhh….it's dreamy I tell you. I shall call it: Dreamy McMiniVany. Nikki–I don't want to hear it!! I know, I know….but you have to see it to believe it! Next thing you know I'll be wearing mom-jeans. Ha!

    Thursday: not much happened.

Friday: we had our follow-up appt with allergy doc. He confirmed the blood tests that Cole has a mild peanut allergy. We are not to give him any peanuts or peanut oil or anything possibly contaminated with peanuts in case it develops into a severe allergy. We're also going to start carrying an epi-pen just in case, but the doc thinks we will never have to use it and the allergy could go away within a year. That is the next time he wants to see us. All in all a pretty good appt. Oh, yeah, no soy allergy which is super-great as he drinks soy formula.

Kid update: Let's start with the lady; Paige is walking everywhere. She seems to walk better on tile floors which is scary if she falls, but she falls pretty gracefully. She is also a very smart cookie. I can't cite specific examples off the top of my head…but I know that she follows every adult conversation. Her personality is rocking and I absolutely love her laugh. Oh something else: her legs are super dark. I can't figure out why she tans more than everyone else when she's not in the sun longer than anyone else. But she is scary dark. I need summer to be over before she develops baby skin cancer. Did I mention the minivan comes with built-in window second row sun blockers?

Cole is awesome. The kid loves chase. That's all he wants to do all day long. He also is running everywhere. Just when I can relax that he's walking really well he starts running to keep my heart rate high. He also is letting us tuck him into bed now for naps and bedtime. It makes me warm and fuzzy inside to lay him down, kiss him and put his blankie over him. Seriously my heart melts every time it's bedtime now. If only Paige would let us put her to sleep without the screaming and tears……. sigh. We've also been giving both babies a bath before bedtime for the past few weeks. It works out nicely into our routine. The babies love to play in the bath together. By the time we get them to their rooms for their bedtime bottle, they are barely awake.

Drew is huge. I think he's pushing 14 pounds now. I talked to one of our old NICU nurses today who has a 4 month old. She said her baby was just over 13 pounds at 8 weeks old and was only in the 75th percentile. I have no idea what percentile Drew is in, but it's up there (us preemie parents live for percentile updates). We have a peed appointment next week so we will find out his true stats. He has officially outgrown his bassinet. Sorry Aunt Nancy. It was wonderful while it lasted. I think this weekend we'll move him into his own crib and room. It'll be weird for me not to have him sleep inches away from me but the kid is just too big. I started bathing him at night and last night he slept 6 hours straight. It scared me. I woke up with my breasts killing me, looked at the clock and lunged at Drew's chest to check if he was still breathing. Last night was the first time he's slept more than 3 hours between feedings. I can't believe he went from feeding every 3 hours to every 6 hours in one night. Hopefully this trend will continue tonight.

That's it for now. Have to give the big boy his bath so Mommy can get some rest.
