Off They Go!

I would have helped, but someone had to hold the camera.

Million dollar smile!

Everyone in the house helps Cole feed, including the baby.

On Saturday the babies attended their first birthday party (thank you very much the for the hospitality godparents Matt and Laurie, are you happy now Matt?). It was absolute bedlam. Kids running everywhere, people swimming, parents eating, it was great. The babies are doing better in better in normal social settings. We were going to go swimming, but there was a lot of activity in the pool. Cole did wander outside and that’s how he got his little head wound (which is looking much better today). When Matt’s dad brought Cole in crying and I saw his face, I was like SH#@, I think I caught myself before I finished the non-kid friendly word, as there was like a group of 3 year olds around. Ooops! Drew ended up falling in love with Laurie’s mom. Thank you for spending most of the day helping us out honorary grandma Pat! Do you know the best part of birthday parties? Gift bags. Finally these kids are starting to pay off. Since they are too young for the goodies, it goes straight to daddy’s belly!

Today has been an odd day. The babies slept past 7 AM. When I went to check on them, they were just chilling in their cribs. This never happens in our house. Every other day these babies are screaming their heads off when they wake up before 6 AM. A very nice Sunday morning treat, nonetheless. Drew is still growing like a weed. We think he’s got some colic. Many times during the day he is so inconsolable. It’s starting to wear on us. Come 6 PM, he’s usually crying for at least 2 hours off and on. We’re eliminating everything from Tobie’s diet to see if that makes a difference.

C & P still aren’t that interested in him, but they are interested in his bouncy chair. It’s pretty funny seeing Cole climb in and out of his old chair (just not that funny when Drew is in it). Cole is starting to run a little. He’ll come out of nowhere at full speed and then just stop on a dime. It’s pretty funny. Paige is just weeks away from walking everywhere. She’s going to be a great walker, you can just tell. Both babies seem to play in the same corners of the room, but not with each other. It’s weird how they want to be near each other, but never acknowledge each other. Maybe they are using some weird brain thing to communicate. Gotta go, all the sudden my brain tells me I must give babies ice cream sandwiches for dinner. Weird that doesn’t sound right, oh well, gotta do what my brain tells me.

I love this picture of paige she’s so adorable. I’ve noticed lately she doesn’t have the glasses on in any of the pics anymore…does she not have to wear them as much?

She’s showing her independence by ripping them off throughout the day.

I love this pic of Paige! Can she teach Miss P how to grow her hair? We still haven’t had our first haircut at 16 months!

There is a DVD called Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr Karp and it is geared toward babies with colic. I work with Healthy Start in Florida and we had a conference where Dr Karp attended and the results are amazing.

Glad you enjoyed the party. They slept so good because they partied so hard. Those Cottrell’s sure know how to party! Used to be beer, shots, and hard core pool basketball competitions…now it’s juice boxes, water wings, and goodie bags. You really should sue them for the road rash on Cole’s face though - I mean what kind of supervision were they providing anyway!?
Just kidding - you can’t sue us - we aren’t worth anything! All our money goes to Tutor Time anyway.
Glad you came - we should do it again soon - but with a little smaller crowd!

Hey Tobie, you may want to look into getting a ring sling for drew. They are super handy when they are little. You can nurse him while you are walking around doing things, and he could be in that while C & P are in the stroller. I really love mine.

My son couldn’t handle me eating any dairy at all. I cut it out for three months and then he was fine with it. It took about a week to see a change because you really have to get all of the milk protein out of your system. If nothing else works, try that! But the bummer is that it also includes chocolate!

Robby had a fall like that - skinned his forehead, nose, and chin on the concrete. Lots of antibiotic ointment.

Can I suggest Tobi get a sling or mei tai for that cute baby? I found the hiker packs more trouble than they were worth… She can email me if she wants info….

I’ll second the baby carrier thing. My 7 month old has been in a pouch/mei tai/sling since he was days old and it’s the only way I’ve been able to chase around the bigger kids.

Also, totally normal for C & P to parallel play. They’d do that if they were just two random toddlers who were placed in the same room with the same toys. They’ll outgrow it soon enough and start interacting but that’s not always a good thing (especially when they want the same toy)!

I just went through the whole “colic” thing with my second baby. I truly thought our whole family was going to go bananas listening to all the crying. After a bunch of experimentation, allergy tests and reflux medicine, Campbell’s discomfort and crying ended up not being colic and instead was an intolerence to lactose. The thing about lactose is that it dosen’t show up on normal allergy tests and can’t be eliminated from your diet as it is produced naturally in your body. You might try giving Drew a bottle of lactose free milk based formula (not soy) for two or three feedings in a row. If it is lactose, he will be more comfortable within a few hours. I have heard from a number of moms who have spent months and months with a crying baby who was labled “colicy” before they figured out the lactose thing.
      Good Luck!

The pic of Paige is SO cute. She’s beautiful!
Have you ever tried static/white noise to calm Drew? Caleb would start fussing every night at 6 PM and would cry for at least 4 hours straight, despite everything we did to calm him down. I finally read the book “Happiest Baby on the Block” and it suggested turning on static from the TV, raido, noise machine, etc. The second we turned it on, he was quite. It became our “music” every evening. After a while, we didn’t even hear it because we got so use to it, and for some reason, it really calmed C down. I kicked myself for not reading the book 3 months earlier! Good luck! The kids look great!
