Mental Note #2
If you find an old sippy cup with milk in it and you don’t know when it was from, just throw it out, don’t try to clean it.

Tell Me About Your Father

eric   July 28th, 2007      6 comments...sweet!

PaigeWe had the baby psychologist over tonight.  I was all prepared for her to bring a minature sofa for Paige to lie on to talk about her problems.  I had envisioned the session like this:

Baby Pyschologist (BP): So Paige, what’s the source of your anxiety?
Paige: dadadada
BP: I see, so why do you wake up screaming in the middle of the night?
Paige: dadadada
BP: Hmmm…I see you have an obsession with your father
Paige: dadadada
BP: Mrs. Kaufman, get rid of Eric and your problems are solved.  That will be $250.

So the psychologist observed our bedtime ritual.  She validated we are doing a pretty darn good job.  She had a ton of little things to incorporate here and there.  All in all, good stuff.  She confirmed that Paige will probably be like this to some degree for a loooooongggg time.  Right now it’s all about schedule.  Do not deviate from the schedule.  The schedule is good.

New Video :: Babies At Play

eric   July 26th, 2007      8 comments...sweet!

I’m finally organizing all the video we’ve taken over the past 2 1/2 months.  It’s one thing to take the video, it’s another to download it and catalog it.  Speaking of which, who actually has  the time to sit through all the hours of video?  Ugh.

Cole Cole Deep In Thought Cole and Drew Paige

I really hate that last post. I don’t like writing about “the dark side” of our princess. We have our developmental doctor visit in about 3 weeks. You can guess what the main topic we will want to talk about. Tonight I let her fall asleep on me for about 1/2 hour, laid her down in her crib, tip toed out of the room, and carefully shut the door.Silence.It was great. For about 20 seconds, then she started her routine. It only lasted about 5 minutes, so that’s progress, right?I’ve been meaning to write about how great the kids have been doing, sans bedtime for Paige. It’s like a whole new world has opened up for the babies toddlers the past few weeks. They have finally discovered each other. You’re laughing, I can tell. But no seriously, they just started playing with each other. It’s incredible to watch their interaction. They’ll laugh at each other, pat each other on the head, and even play the “hey that’s my toy” game. But they have two favorite games to play with each other. They love “chase”, the only problem is they both head out in opposite directions. We’re working on that one. The other game is “piss daddy off”. This game is a hoot. They see me watching TV and then proceed to turn it off. Off, on, off, on, off. They could do it for hours. I on the other hand will just find something else to do. Who’s bright idea was to make the power switch glow bright red, at the perfect level for a toddler to press it? I guess this is why I need a 60 inch plasma tv to hang on the wall out of reach. God I’m good.

Developmentally, Cole is nailing milestone after milestone. He is walking like a champ with his arms down. Most of the time, he has a toy in each hand. If he is our little pinball, our house is our pinball machine. I could just sit for hours and watch him bounce from one area to another. He just started grabbing toys with pull ropes and he’ll drag them behind him. He’ll even switch hands when rounding a corner so the toy won’t go off it’s wheels. His vocabulary is also taking off. He says dog, good, and I think Drew Drew. He’s able to rattle off a string of words. Obviously not much makes sense, but you can tell he’s trying to communicate. I think it’s just a matter of weeks before a bunch of words come out. Probably one of my favorite things he does is part of our bedtime routine. Typically each night, Tobie draws a bath upstairs for the babies. I’ll then say “come on babies, bath time” and they’ll come to the base of the stairs. Both babies then race up the stairs. Once Cole reaches the top, he walks around the open gate and shuts it. It’s like clockwork. If I tell him to wait because Paige isn’t all the way up the stairs, he’ll wait till she is, then he’ll shut the gate. He seems to understand so much now.

Drew has also come around the past few weeks. Besides being huge, he is smiling and cooing non-stop. He’s definitely sleeping less during the day. He loves to sit upright. He also loves to stand. I know it’s not that great developmentally for him, but he’s so happy when he stands, just like Cole was back in the day (don’t tell the therapists).

And lastly Paige. She’s been walking like a champ for what seems forever. I can’t remember the last time she even attempted to crawl. She’s about 1 month behind developmentally from Cole. I think she uses Cole has her muse. She started putting smaller containers into bigger containers. She’s really picking up on how all her toys work.

A few last items: We are going to get less therpay now. Apparently the babies are “normal” in most areas now. Some weight checks. Paige ~25 lbs. Cole ~22 lbs. Drew ~16 lbs. The phrase “eating us out of house and home” has started to sink in with me.

My Paig-E-Poo

PaigePeople always say, start them early.  So that’s what I did yesterday.  I brought Paige to Starbucks with me to pick Tobie up a Venti Non-Fat No Whip Easy On The Ice But Make It Taste Good Frappuccino.  Seemed like a good idea, right?  It’s not very often we get one on one time with the kids.  It’s cool just picking up ONE kid and heading out.  Normally it would take us at least 30 minutes to get ready if everyone was leaving the house.  Paige and I had a good time.  We came back, dropped off the booty, and bid adieu as I headed off to work.  Tobie called me about 5 minutes later saying Paige was screaming hysterically.  She was banging on the front window glass screaming for me (she acted like that for about 20 minutes). Just hang on, I’m going somewhere with this.  It’s been the culmination of flipping out behavior that’s progressively gotten worse since the arrival of Drew.

PaigeRemember about 6-8 months ago when Paige had her separation anxiety attacks?  Well, she’s worse than ever.  It’s like she de-evolved.  Paige has been going down terribly for naps and bedtime.  She’ll scream for 5-30 minutes before falling asleep.  And when I say scream, I mean SCREAM! If you go in the room, you’ll see her sitting with her feet dangling out her crib, hands clutching the bars, screaming!  Her head?  It’s all bruised from her doing face plants protesting anytime she doesn’t get her way. During the day, if we leave her line of sight, if she is paying attention, she flips out.   When she wakes up in the morning, screaming (and I mean screaming).  When she goes down for bed, screaming.  We have tried everything to comfort her.  If I let her fall asleep on me while sitting in the recliner, the moment I begin to get up to start bringing her to bed, she flips out.  We need help.  She has to be hurting herself every time she hurls her body into the floor, crib, or wall and not to mention the psychological ramifications. Her screaming seems to be getting worse.  The arrival of Drew definitely set her off (probably should have brought someone else’ baby over to help train the babies before Drew, just like they do for parents who have dogs before their new baby comes home).

Dr. Ferber, if you are reading this, your on my s#%t list for your crappy “sleep method” or I like to call it “piss my baby off even further as I keep going in her room to comfort her”.  Who’s got some advice on this?  I’m all ears.
