Tell Me About Your Father

eric   July 28th, 2007

PaigeWe had the baby psychologist over tonight.  I was all prepared for her to bring a minature sofa for Paige to lie on to talk about her problems.  I had envisioned the session like this:

Baby Pyschologist (BP): So Paige, what’s the source of your anxiety?
Paige: dadadada
BP: I see, so why do you wake up screaming in the middle of the night?
Paige: dadadada
BP: Hmmm…I see you have an obsession with your father
Paige: dadadada
BP: Mrs. Kaufman, get rid of Eric and your problems are solved.  That will be $250.

So the psychologist observed our bedtime ritual.  She validated we are doing a pretty darn good job.  She had a ton of little things to incorporate here and there.  All in all, good stuff.  She confirmed that Paige will probably be like this to some degree for a loooooongggg time.  Right now it’s all about schedule.  Do not deviate from the schedule.  The schedule is good.

GREAT idea! I’m so glad that you had someone come over… despite the “little things,” it sounds like the validation itself must have been very rewarding! Hearing that you’re doing something right, doing something good for your children, when you’re feeling hopeless - well, it must have been heartwarming. Although there must be some disappointment that there was no quick fix to the situation… at least you now have the authority to tell Paige that you’re doing everything right and she just needs to get with the program. :)

Ava and Paige sound so similar. No matter what I have tried, Ava just has to cry a little bit after I set her down in her crib. I was anti-cry-it-out for a long time, but then it occurred to me that this might just be the way the kid winds down. It’s like her post-playtime, pre-bedtime relaxation ritual. I know it is more involved an issue for Paige, but I just wanted to say that this is just how some kids are and Dr. Sears be damned! Happily, Ava cried only for about 2 minutes tonight :)

I have been pondering your problem for some time. Could some of the problem be due to Paige’s poor eyesight? Just a thought. Maybe when you take her glasses off for bed it makes the transition scary for her since 1) she knows that glasses off mean bedtime and 2) she can’t see very well and gets scared and disoriented. Or, maybe this is just a phase and I am totally off base..

She has her glasses off most of the day. Alas no correlation between taking them off and bedtime.

I think this is an interesting read about sleep. I definitely have a tension gainer. Maybe it will give a little insight. I really like Moxie!
