Tobie here:
Today was Paige’s eye appt. Every day I look at my calendar for upcoming appts during the week, month, next month. I’m kind of a calendar freak. So I’ve had Paige’s eye appt glaring at me from my calendar for a long time now. I absolutely dread Paige’s eye appts. I think I’ve cried at every one because the news was so depressing. Really we’ve been very fortunate to have the outcome we’ve had with Paige and Cole considering how early they entered this world. Cole’s lungs were an issue for soooo long, but we overcame that. Then his eating was an issue, but he’s gained significant weight lately (we’re on the growth chart!!). Paige’s eyes are the only scary haunting long-term issue looming over us. So after that prelude…my baby girl is going to be fine!!!! I can’t believe it. I’m still in shock. Okay before we get all excited, she will have severe near-sightedness. Her prescription still sucks, but it didn’t change. The good news is that her CVI improved drastically. I guess it was pretty bad, but he said with her vast improvement over these last couple of months it should only continue to get better. Right now he said, direct quote, “at this point in time I do not anticipate any long-term issues with her eyesight.” After asking him to explain he said that we will make every effort to get her into contacts as soon as possible and he also mentioned laser surgery (again!) that should completely correct her vision. I didn’t ask when she was eligible for laser surgery, I don’t really care as long as I know that at some point down the road that is an option for us. By now I’m bawling thankfully this time from good news. I think this doctor must think I’m psychotic as he’s handing me tissues. I ask if he thinks she’ll be able to go to public school or drive a car with her vision because at one point he told me not to expect this. He says yes. Public school, yes. Drive a car, yes. Large print textbooks, probably not. Wow. We still don’t have to patch which is another thing I was dreading. He said as long as her eyes don’t cross (besides for the occasional cross when she’s upset or tired) we’re fine with not patching. Go Paige!!

This is such great news for Paige and for the whole family. I can’t wait until she’s old enough to chauffer everyone around. That sounds like a very good thing (and she does seem like such a natural behind the wheel).
What wonderful news this is! I am sure you feel a huge sense of relief. Yay Paige!!
