Performance Appraisal

It’s been a year since I left my job.  Actually I never really mentally came back 100% after I delivered the trips.  I couldn’t get my head in the game.  With all the doctor appointments and therapy visits, the uncertain future the kids had, working the graveyard shift seemed insignificant in the grand scheme of things.  But all that’s history now.  I have now been a full-time SAHM for a year.  In honor of doing performance appraisals at my former job, Eric and I did a semi-formal performance appraisal on my new career. These are my job responsibilities:

1.  Keep three kids happy and healthy.

  • Exceeds expectations.  I think all three babies are really happy and feel very loved.  I have 3 hours of assistance out of my 40+ hour work week.  The rest of the time I am juggling keeping 3 babies entertained by myself.

2.  Schedule all doctors appointments and therapies and make sure we attend.

  • Meets expectations.  Have yet to miss an appointment.  Eric: But how many appointments do you think are on one day but turn out to be on another day?

3.  Cook, clean, laundry.

  • Below expectations.  Laundry is done consistently.  Cooking and cleaning are slacking. Eric: Cooking?  When did you start doing that? :)

4.  Keep house safe.

  • Meets expectations.  The entire house was baby-proofed and organized this summer.  Eric: $1200 later….

5.  Give birth to Drew after 37 weeks so as to have a full-term baby.

  • Meets expectations.  The delivery was a little chaotic but the outcome was divine.  EricI wish I was there for the delivery.

6.  Breastfeed Drew for 4 months.

  • Exceeds expectations.  Originally I had planned to breastfeed Drew until my summer help left, but 6 months and we’re still going strong.

7.  Maintain myself.

  • Below expectations.  Still overweight.  Still don’t manage to do my hair or makeup most days. Eric: I’m not commenting on this one with a 10 foot pole.

Overall….I would give myself a Meets Expectations for the year.  Good thing my salary is non-existent and a raise is not contingent on this appraisal.  Eric: You have an indirect salary and some days it seems you spend more than you make.  Did I just say that?  Eeek…yeah, never mind, salary non-existent…check.

Ummm…I disagree with the overall score.
I think that your should really acknowledge how you have EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS in so many areas. Honestly, if you were working outside of the home, all of these areas would be lacking of your time and energy. And if you think back 5 years ago, could you every imagine yourself in this situation?

How come there’s no category in there for sense of humor, and how you’ve handled such stressful situations? And what about the extracurricular activities (swim, the zoo, tumbling class)? When all is said and done, does cleaning really count?

I think that 10-20-30 years from now, you will be looking back at category #1 and realizing why you wrote that first. It is #1. Your kids aren’t going to remember if you fixed your hair or put on makeup (at least, they won’t remember at this age); but they will remember feeling safe and loved. (Even if the safety had a high pricetag.)

You’re AWESOME Tobie… and I think it’s great that you can stay at home with the kids. And although your salary is nill, you (and every one of us staying at home) deserve a HUGE salary.
Eric - just imagine how much it would cost for full-time nanny, house-cleaner, cook, chauffeur, etc.

Pam - But then I would have my clothes washed, the floors cleaned, and food in my belly. Hmmm…where would I find one of these full-time nanny, house-cleaner, cook, chauffeur people?

I think you have met or exceeded in ALL area that count. As far as Eric is concerned…What happened? Did Chipotle close?

Please, no more Chipotle. They know my order by heart by now!

It seems that I agree with the rest of the ‘review board’ and feel that you have EXCEEDED ALL the expectations for your career… Oh and by the way… I only ‘wish’ I was as overweight as you… YOU LOOK GOOD GIRL!!!!!
