So I know the articles about BPA contaminated sippy cups came out a long time ago (Eric tells me it’s been at least eight months). I finally got Cole off his “baby” sippy cup about two weeks ago and was able to transition him to a Tractor print sippy cup. Got to love the garbage truck and tractor fascination!!! Anyways, so I was feeling guilty that the other two were still on BPA contaminated cups but we KNOW which cups are ours. Drew had the racecar topped cup, Paige had the solid colored no-spout cups, Cole had the Playtex cool-designed cups. Now all chaos has erupted because they all have the same style Playtex cup but I’m going to have to teach them they all have an assigned color. Sounds easy, right?? Well, Drew hasn’t taken a sip yet this morning and keeps saying “no, Cole” as he’s looking at his cup and Paige has also yet to drink and kept saying “new cup” in a not-so-happy voice. We’ll get it eventually….
So another thought on this BPA-free sippy cup madness. There really isn’t a whole lot out there for variety. Playtex seems to offer two choices of sippies, the ones we bought and a straw kind. And there’s a Dora/Diego sippy which we were previously using that leaked all the time and that’s it. I know I could probably go on-line and find a thousand different varieties, but when I was looking at the hundreds of sippies offered at Target I was surprised there were only three different BPA-free cups.
Other thoughts: I finally took the bumper pad off Drew’s bed. He’s fifteen months and I know you’re supposed to do it at ten months. I can’t let go of him being my baby apparently!!
Another thought: remember when I was bummed my kids didn’t watch TV? I have to limit our time now in front of the boob-tube. It’s ridiculous that’s all they want to do! Another funny thing is that I know they hear people call me Tobie a lot and there is a Toby on Thomas. Whenever there’s a story about Toby, Cole comes up to me and says “Toby” and I don’t know if he’s making that connection or he thinks Toby is funny.
Ok…got to start this morning. Got to make bacon for my crew.

Ah yes, BPA. Seems to be in everything these days! We just got the born free bottles for our little one that we are expecting next month, but I have no idea about my daughter’s sippy cups. My son has moved onto glass cups now, so no worries there (He’s 4), but I have yet to see any sippy cups at our Target that say “BPA Free” I hope they are coming. Right now, she just drinks from regular sized water bottles fresh out of the refrigerator. Milk, juice, water, whatever…and promptly spills it all over her shirt. I can’t wait to get them! Can you e-mail me the ones that you have found? Maybe I can get them on the internet? I got her 1 Born Free sippy but she hated it!
Thanks!
Advent sippy cups are BPA free
We got the Thermos funtainers http://www.thermos.com/Product_detail.aspx?CatCode=THER&SubcategoryID=1&ViewAll=true&ProductID=312 and LOVE them. I am in Vegas, and they keep drinks cold and they are as leak free as we have ever had. Not sure about BPA free though. Give them a look!
ok ok i promise - i will send you some sippy cups that are free. i thought i had them before, but they were prototypes.
How do you distinguish between BPA contaminated cups and the ones that are okay? Does it have to specifically say BPA free on the package?
Yeah, most manufacturers are using BPA free has part of their marketing, so they usually have something about it on the package.
We really like the Thermos ones too. Take and toss are BPA free, and so are Avent. The Thermos ones come in lots of different characters and you can get them at Target. There is both a straw cup and a sippy with and without handles. There are also The Safe Sippy and Klean Kanteen that come in different colors. They are stainless steel like the Thermos.
The Safe Sippy is the one I was going to send you.
Nearly any plastic will have BPA in it, so the stainless is what makes it BPA free.
Hey there, yes it seems like BPA is everywhere but some states are starting to ban toys/baby products made with BPA. Not to be alarmist (I’m a little skeptical of conspiracy theories) but if you look up some information on the BPA controversy over the last 15 years, the link between the plastics industry, testing companies, and the (US) Government is kind of creepy!
Here’s some more reading on BPA and alternatives:

Any products that are made by Nubby are BPA free and they come in neat colors and different sizes. They are leak proof also which comes in handy and easy to drink from and clean.
Not all Nubby are BPA free, the harder clearish plastic ones are not.
are you sure the avent ones are BPA free, because their bottles aren’t, and they are one of the biggest “offenders” when it comes to the BPA controversy. On the other hand, Born Free is making a killing, I spent $29 for 3- 5oz baby bottles…Give me a break already… :o(
