Ballerina Paigalina

tobie   July 3rd, 2009      3 comments...sweet!

Yesterday was Paige’s big ballet recital. We went into it with low expectations because technically she’s only had 3 hours total of ballet practice if you add up all her lessons. She was amazing!!!! Seriously amazing! I often think Paige isn’t the most graceful child, but comparing her to the other three and four year old kids…she fit right in! So back to the performance…they did the cutest little routines standing in lines, then they formed a circle and had a little individual time, then they did leaps and skips across the stage one at a time.

I’m torn between my favorite parts of the performance: Paige’s big smile on stage or Drew shouting from his seat “there’s Paige-y! She’s great!”

So in case you’re wondering: yes, we’re definitely continuing with fall ballet with the same instructor and now I’m convinced we’re going to have to work tap into the schedule too.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions on swim goggles. I am planning on using one of the websites suggested (the one that carried the cute pink, blue, and purple goggles for kids ages 3-6). It is pricey, but I think well worth the money. I bumped up our August appt with the eye doc so we can order the correct prescription because that would be a major bummer if their eyes were worse and three weeks from now their goggles weren’t helpful. I also considered postponing swim lessons for a month until their goggles are ready because I don’t want them to be fearful of swim lessons but we are paying group prices for a semi-private class (awesome!) so I think I will just ask their instructor not to totally dunk their heads for the first three weeks of class and we will keep their glasses on the first three weeks. We’ve been using their glasses up to this point in the pool anyways…so we’ll just continue with that ignorance and hope that their glasses don’t get totally destroyed! Chances are they may need new lenses after their eye appt in three weeks anyways.

    Swimmer’s Eyes

    tobie   June 30th, 2009      9 comments...sweet!

Uuggg. So I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about vision since the circus with Paige on Friday. What can she see…what can’t she see? She can definitely make out what’s happening on Clifford on TV. But Clifford is a BIG RED DOG! Could she see the circus? Anyways…we are supposed to start swim lessons on Monday and it all of a sudden occurred to me that the harsh chemicals in the swim school might not be the best for their glasses. So I called Eyemasters and spoke to my peeps over there (still very impressed with customer service at Eyemasters) and they said absolutely not should their glasses be worn in swimming pools. Oops Eric! We’ve been taking them into our pool at home! The chemicals can destroy the UV coating on the lenses and the lenses are porous which means the chemicals from the pool can get in there and make the lenses cloudy. Uuggg. So Eyemasters doesn’t carry swim goggles or know of a place where we can get them. I seem to recall our earlier place carrying prescription swim goggles for kids…but I don’t want to go back there. And I was thinking that going swimming without floaties in a new place is going to be intimidating enough for the kids, then add to that taking away their ability to see? Yikes….scary!
Do any of our readers have any recommendations on where online to order swim goggles from? And is it ridiculously expensive? We do live in AZ and I was planning on keeping them in swimming year-round so I don’t feel like this would be a fluff item. I can’t imagine buying them swim goggles every time their prescription changes too…..did we mention prematurity sucks? Could be worse….could be worse……
    Breathe Eric…breathe.

    Move out baby

    tobie   June 30th, 2009      2 comments...sweet!

Owen was kicked out of our room last night. We moved him into his own room and it was one of the worst nights sleep he’s had yet. I don’t know if he didn’t know where he was, or that he didn’t see me in the room…but he was up often! Hopefully he’ll settle into his room soon. He’s in a room off from the other rooms so I was hoping to let him “cry it out” a little longer each time he wakes up so he’ll realize that crying takes away from sleep time and maybe not wake up as much. And I’m hoping that he’ll learn to put himself back to sleep better instead of relying on me. Most nights to keep him from waking up the others, I would nurse him or pat him back to sleep. But he is still waking up 3-5 times a night….uugggh. That’s just too often for a baby almost 5 months old. So we’ll see.
He is taking the bottle really well. I’ve been pumping every day and my girl J has been feeding him the pumped goods. It’s nice that this gives me a little more freedom during the day. Also he’s been eating baby food (devouring it) which is also nice because this weekend when we were out for our Sunday breakfast I was able to feed him baby food instead of throwing him under my shirt (which is always fun *sarcasm*).
And he’s huge. He’s gaining weight at warp speeds. I haven’t weighed him myself and his 6-mo appt is still 5 weeks away…but he has to be pushing 18+lbs….has to be.
Other than that….I need a lot of coffee this morning. Thank God for Clifford on TV.

    Circus fever

    tobie   June 26th, 2009      1 comment...cool!

Today was the circus. It was not the circus of my past. This circus was like a cirque de soleil (sp?) show. Lots of singing, dancing, lights, oh yeah..and a little circus action. Drew loved it, he was pointing to various things, clapping and taking it all in. I honestly couldn’t tell if Paige and Cole enjoyed it. They looked like deer in headlights the whole time and I tried to talk to them during the show and they wouldn’t talk back. Stunned into silence. Our seats weren’t the greatest, we were in the last row…so I’m not sure what Paige was able to see. Her head was cocked during the show and she was looking out the periphery of one eye. (yes, eye appts have been booked for August).

So in other fabulous news: Eric and I were able to get out for a 104 degree tennis date this afternoon. We played for 30 minutes and thought we were going to die. But it was really nice to be out together (and I smoked him on the court so that made it even better). :)

    Bend over

What does a latex glove, vasoline, and a suppository have in common??

They all went up Cole’s butt today. After five days of not pooping and a little advice from the peed’s office…Operation Elimination was a huge success. Thank goodness.

The bad news is that he was in a lot of discomfort so I need to stay on top of his bowel situation to make sure he doesn’t withhold and constipate himself again.

    Love Summer

tobie   June 25th, 2009      No comments...what are you waiting for?

This summer is going soooooo well, the kids and I are having a blast. Too much fun to blog. So here’s a two second update: Paige and Cole started summer school this week. It sounds so weird when I tell people that. Like they failed preschool and they’re making up for their delinquencies in summer school. Kidding. It’s a new special program just for three year olds to try and entice other three year olds to attend our amazing preschool. The class size is 7 kids this week, and five kids next week. Paige and Cole go for 4 hours a day, T-Th for two weeks. That is a LONG time to be away from the nest, but they love it and it’s super nice just having Drew and Owen at home. We were supposed to be potty training Drew this week and next while we can give him the individual attention needed for it…but I’m kind of changing my tactics for Drew. For some odd reason, maybe him being a different kid, or it not being imperative for him to go to preschool, I just don’t feel like pushing him. He’s definitely showing a lot of interest on his own and I’m just kind of rolling with his desires and hoping he gets it soon. I just don’t want this to be an all-consuming battle of wills where I’m cleaning the floor every hour. No thanks. We’ll see. He actually will tell us that “he needs to use the potty to go to school. And that Mrs. S will be his teacher if he uses the potty. And won’t Mrs. S be so happy when he uses the potty”??

Other news: circus tomorrow. The kids are pumped. We did go to the Imagination Avenue place on Monday. What a fantastic place!! What a great concept! I can’t say enough great things about that place. They were very accomodating to families…benches for breastfeeding, lunch on site, a special baby zone for Owen to play, and all the cool things for the toddlers!! We’re going to try and go once a week until they close.

Kindermusik is over. I will resume it with Owen once he gets a little older, but the older kids outgrew their classes. I didn’t say that right….the older kids can no longer go in a class with Drew. Their age difference once again separates them. But that’s okay because we are going to use the music funds to take swim lessons once again. We start on Monday and this is really a great thing. We don’t know how to swim at all and the kids don’t want to go in without their swim circles. Cole doesn’t even want to get his big toe wet anymore. I don’t know where that water aversion came from! He was doing great by the end of last summer. So maybe he just forgot how much fun swimming is. I got Paige and Cole into a class all by themselves and Drew is still young enough that he needs parent participation for his advanced toddler class.

Think that’s it. Got to go!

    Weekly update

    tobie   June 17th, 2009      7 comments...sweet!

Once again Drewski has a double ear infection. He just got over a double ear infection about two and a half weeks ago, so I’m guessing that tubes are also in his near future. So the bad part to this story is that it once again took me two nights of not sleeping, a lot of tears, and a lot of screaming before I suspected an ear infection and took him to the doctor. For a little boy with an amazing vocabulary, he just can’t tell me when he has ear infections. Frustrating!!

So on to happier news: the weekly activities are going great. Better than great! Cole is doing very well in his tumbling class. I’m not that impressed with it…but again it’s not about the class, it’s about Cole doing something on his own. Paige and Cole take the My Gym class together and I’m super impressed with that class. And last week we were able to peek in on Paige dancing in her ballet class. I don’t know if I mentioned last week that our Kindermusik teacher politely asked me to not bring Owen to class anymore, but this week we were able to leave Owen with my mom which was so much more relaxing for me.

Drew is showing more and more interest in the potty and big boy undies. This morning he really didn’t want to wear a pull-up to Kindermusik and I said sure, let’s go with that momentum. He stayed dry the whole class (a total of 90 minutes including driving time) and was loving his undies. Awesome! The bummer thing is that we were going to really hit potty training hard next week but now his new antibiotics cause red diarrhea so I think we’ll wait until he’s done with those before we start wearing undies again.

Owen went to the doctor last week. Don’t know if I mentioned it. Anyways, he was given the green light to start eating stage 1 baby food. He reminds me of Drew eating baby food where he can’t get enough of it. It’s so much fun feeding him. He can power through a full jar in one feeding. The other plus to the baby food is that he is getting so big (almost 16 pounds, 50% weight, 85% height). He definitely has had a major growth spurt lately. Another exciting thing is that Owen has taken the bottle the last three days. This is good because we are going to the circus next week and he will be with my mom for about four hours (so he’ll need to eat sometime in there).

Think that’s it. Fun fun stuff. Oh yeah….and we miss you Aunt Nikki. Come back soon! Last week was so fun with you!
