It’s official…we’re normal

tobie   July 23rd, 2008      3 comments...sweet!

So we had our official speech evaluation/testing this morning.  The speech therapist administered three different kinds of tests to see where P and C were with receptive and verbal language skills.  Paige was much more verbal than Cole, but on the one-word receptive language test Cole did score 2 points higher than Paige.  Paige was above average on the verbal skills, whereas Cole was on the lower end of average.  The main thing I learned from these tests, (besides P and C are awesome) is that Paige understands language better the more words you use, but Cole has better understanding with shorter simpler language.  Interesting…..They are not delayed at all.  Paige is a little higher than average, and Cole is average for their age.  We’re going to have one hour of speech a month for three months then cease.

We also had a PT appt today.  We are going to one hour a month starting in August.

Did I mention 28 days until preschool?

Garbage trucks–yea!

tobie   July 21st, 2008      5 comments...sweet!

Okay..I’m so excited about this I had to write a post ASAP because I feel Eric just can’t get as excited about this as I need him to be.  We just got our Scottsdale Parks and Recreation schedule for Fall and I absolutely love this city and what they offer all ages.  So anyways…they have a Garbage Truck Day for ages 2-5 where kids can see garbage trucks up close for 45 minutes.  Does that sound like heaven for Cole??  I was bummed when I saw the day it was offered because it was a Thursday during preschool hours and I was torn about whether to pull him out of school for this special occasion.  But then I was debating to my mom on the phone and she said the day it’s offered is during Fall Break from preschool.  It’s Fate I tell you!!  Fate!  Now all you readers in Scottsdale…don’t you dare sign up for this and block my little Cole-man out!!!

Every ending has a new beginning

tobie   July 15th, 2008      7 comments...sweet!

So whereas preschool is starting in a mere 35 days(!!!!!!), our therapies are slowly coming to an end.  We were going to have all therapies end when they turn 3 years old, but our therapists are realizing how awesome our P and C are, and everything is ceasing here in the next month.  We have a new speech therapist that started with us last week.  After today’s session she said not only are our kids not developmentally delayed, but they are advanced in what is expected of toddlers their age.  How freakin’ cool is that!!!!  So she is going to do one more evaluation next week and either suggest discontinuation of therapy or possibly one hour a month until January.  Same as our PT therapy.  Wow.  I can’t tell you how good it feels to know that there are no delays and they are so normal.

Life is good.

Different Hair Styles

These were taken right after we got out of the pool.  Drew has some curls to his hair, while Cole’s is pretty straight.

All About Drew

tobie   July 12th, 2008      6 comments...sweet!

My sweet little Drewski, oh how I love thee.  This kid is just awesome.  His personality is really shining through and he is so freakin’ hilarious.  Drew cracks himself up all the time.  He laughs all the time and loves to imitate his brother and sister.  He no longer walks anywhere, it’s full sprinting or not at all.  He is so sure-footed though that’s it’s not as scary as when Paige used to run.  (I still don’t know if it was her eyes that made her so off-balance?)  He’s very into books now and will sit and flip through some several times a day.  He has one or two favorites that we read before nap and bedtime and he can spend forever pointing to the various animals on the pages.  He loves his popper (thanks Cindy again, god knows what we’d do if we didn’t have three!) and will bring poppers around to those without when he feels like cruisin’ and poppin’.

What else?  He loves his little Fisher-Price farmhouse which is kind of funny because the other kids never really showed that much interest in it.  He loves the new Thomas train table.  He dunks basketballs about fifteen times a day…and I know Eric is thinking NBA.  When he makes a basket he says in his super-deep voice “Dunk”.  He likes whatever the other kids are playing with.  Weird story:  he likes to sit on an Elmo potty when the other kids are on it (hence we have three so we don’t have to fight over Elmo potties).  Anyways, tonight he had a really big poop and before he let it out he went over and dragged an Elmo potty to the center of the room.  Was he trying to let us know he needed to poop on the potty?  Smartest baby ever??

Okay here’s the bad part:  Drew is incredibly smart.  He knows what we want from him but most times he is the least cooperative of our three kids.  If we say “let’s get in the car” he’ll run down the driveway.  If I ask him to stay close, he’ll run away.  The other day we were at Petsmart and he started running away from us laughing his giddy laugh and we lost him in the store.  When we found him, he wasn’t freaked out, he was LAUGHING.  Oh geez.  Another not so pleasant thing about Drew right now is that if he doesn’t get his way and he tantrums, he flails his arms and hits.  I’m not sure if he’s meaning to hit or he just flaps his arms and sometimes my body is an innocent bystander.  Either way it’s not pleasant when Drew doesn’t get his way.  He is in a phase right now where he is very non-tolerant of Moxie.  I should mention that Moxie has gotten a little out of hand lately herself.  She is now stealing food directly out of the children’s hands and that is a big no-no.  And Drew can’t stand that.  He whines and yells whenever he’s eating and Moxie goes by him.  I’ve had to lock the poor dog out on the back patio in the heat until he’s done eating.

Drew is finally sleeping all naps in his own crib (for probably the last month).  It took a long time getting there but now we’re going down for naps and bedtime happy and awake.  He really has taken a liking to the blankets my Grandma (their G-G-ma) has made for them and when I lay him in his crib he just snuggles up with his blankie and is happy happy happy.  My Grandma rocks for making the boys something they look forward to going to bed to get.  Now if only Paige would find security in her blankie instead of still waking me up 2-3 times a night……

His vocabulary is HUGE.  I honestly don’t know how many words Drew can say but if I had to guess I’d say in the 40 word range.  He still can’t say Paige which is funny because he can say Mommy, Daddy, Cole and Jessica (our girl in the afternoons).  One of his new words which cracks me up because it is so random is octopus.  Weird, huh?  Reminds me of when I was learning Spanish in college and we’d learn stupid phrases like ‘wash the plates’.  Okay, maybe that wasn’t that stupid of a phrase…but you know what I mean.

I still haven’t figured out what special mommy and me activity Drew and I are going to do when P and C are in preschool.  I want to do something that he’ll love and something that I never got a chance to do with two babies before.  I know it doesn’t matter what we do as long as we hang together it’ll be awesome.  I’ll figure it out, I still have five weeks until school starts.
